Officer Bohach,
I was never honored to have met you. I have known other members of your agency who are no longer with us. I hope you are looking down and you know how truly amazing and what a wonderful woman your daughter has become. I have read your reflections through the years that Lindsey has left for you. They can tear the hardest persons heart out. You gave your life so others can live in a safer place. Lindsey you are a true insperation to all of us who serve in this profession and I hope if tragedy should ever befall my family my future child can overcome the tragedy with such grace and dignity as you. I hope your life gives you all the happiness you want. God knows you have earned it.

We were friends since childhood. Still not a day goes by without thoughts of what was and would have been. Something about this ODMP still helps after all the years. Thanks to the folks at ODMP to help us keep the memories. Most important, to share that we are not alone in missing those that were, and still are, so important to our lives.

My husband Mike, was an officer at Reno PD when John was killed. My son went to school with his daughter. It really struck close to home. After all these years, my heart goes out to his family.

As I sit here and reflect on the loss of my father Deputy Gary R. Downs, 18 years ago today. My thoughts are directed to you the family of another Officer to whom I will forever share this date with each year. I hope that memories of your father, husband, son and friend bring you great joy. My heart is with you today and always.
Sincerely, Joy (Downs) Millard

John, its been eight long years since you were taken from us. I still remember our conversation we had the afternoon before that fateful day. I can still hear you laughing and the joking we did that day. Although many things have changed, your memory is still alive. You and your family were apart of all of us. God bless.

Hi Daddy,
Coming to this site today was heartbreaking after hearing and reading about the 4 Oakland Police Officers who were tragically killed yesterday. My prayers and thoughts are with them, as I truly know what they are going through. After looking at all of their sites, I could not get my mind of off you, and the same tragedy that struck our family 7 years ago.
As I read through some of your old and new reflections, I think about our true friends out there who still remember you and keep you in their hearts.
As for me, I think of you daily and hope that you are in a happy place looking over all of us. I will be finishing my freshman year at The University of Nevada Reno in about 6 weeks, and am I am looking forward to continuing on with my biology major and hopefully going on to medical school. I always wonder what life would be like if you were still here, but I have to say I am living a good life, and I hope that there are good things in my future.
Keep watching over all of your family and friends, and your brothers and sisters in law enforcement safe.
Love,
Lindsey xo

John, Bless you and your family and the Reno Police Department. To all officers in the Reno Police Dept.,
thank you for everything you do for fallen officers. We know if there is a fallen officer in Northern California that the Reno Police Dept. will be there to pay respect to their brother or sister, to their family, and their agency.

Lindsey, you continue to inspire me.

It is hard not to count the years when the anniversaries come. This is always a difficult day for me on the calendar, as I am sure difficult for so many others that were touched by you in life and in death. I regulary visit the fallen officers memorial in DC and view your name etched in the stone along with so many others. Every other day I focus my memories with you on the fun and happy times, this day unfortunately the sadness creeps in.

I with many others really miss you Brother.

On the 7th anniversary of Officer Bohach’s death, we honored his service during roll call by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job.

Officer Bohach may be gone, but is not forgotten.

John, I never knew you personally. I was there the day you were shot. I was one of many investigators involved in the aftermath. I drove your patrol car to the crime lab and I remember thinking of how we can be here one day and gone the next. I attended your funeral and I cried when your friend spoke of the toy telephone ringing and daughter answering it. I will never forget you, your family or your brothers and sisters at RPD. Godspeed.

Officer Bohach, Whenever I walk down the detective’s hallway, I can’t help but to stop and look at the newspaper articles proudly hanging on the wall. I never knew you but I hope to be as good as an officer as the department and these reflections represent you and to be as good of a father as your daughter represents you. This is a hard job but you performed your duties honorably.

Lindsey, Thank you so much for sharing your feelings here, you are such an inspiration. No matter how often I read your entries they bring tears to my eyes. The scariest part of this job, for me, is to imagine my son and daughter growing up without their father but your entries take away from that fear. You, your father and your family are in the thoughts and prayers of all of us at the department even if we didn’t know your father.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I have stopped counting the years and focus on the memories. The memories we had, and the ones we will never have. It does not really get easier with time! We all appreciate the time you were here.

Hi John,

It's been too long since somebody wrote to you. I only had the chance to work with you a few times, but it isn't, and never will be the same here without you. You have not...and will not ever be forgotten.

Another year has passed and you have not been forgotten. Each day someone who loves you or was close friends with you, remembers you with fondness and love. You will never be forgotten. Continue to watch over all of your loved ones and thoses still out on patrol guarding over the Thin Blue Line. You are a true hero.

Officer Bohach,
Today is the sixth anniversary of your EOW. Your courage will never be forgotten, and will serve as a lesson in sacrifice to all. My thoughts are with your loved ones today as they remember you and the man you were.
