Reflections for Chief of Police Cecil F. Gurr

As I stood by the roadside
The procession rode by
I saw many brave men
With a tear in their eye.

As I looked to the west
The line streached out of sight.
Each car carried people
Who stand for what's right.

To honor a man
With a star by his name,
For him, much to early
The grim reaper came

Now the town will remember
The man we have lost.
To protect all of us
He paid the ultimate cost.

Gunned down by a felon
Released on parole
But his memory lives on
In our heart and our soul.

He stood for what's right
And all that is good.
This world would be better
If everyone would.

So let's give our support
Tho the ones who fight crime.
Especially now!
In this most trying time.

Remember the family
Of the man who is gone
For them in this world
Life must go on.

And to you, Cecil Gurr
You're respected and loved
Not only by us
But by God up above.

For as He looked upon us
In our grief and our pain
God shed his own tears
In a torrent of rain.

I'd just like to say that I'm sorry to the family. I never knew chief Gurr personally, but I'd already say that he's made a big change in my life.

Peace to you and your family chief

cheif cecil gurr was one of the most generous and kind people i know. rain or shine he would put personal activities aside to help a fellow officer or friend. his kindness and love for the people he served will always be remembered and cherished as his memory lives on. he was the kind of person that when you were in his presence he made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. as a police officers wife my heart aches for our men that served under cheif gurr and the loss that they feel from losing their great leader. But it also aches for us the wives as we lost the hero who protected our men. we love you cheif.

To one fine officer. Cecil and I started in the Basin about 2 months apart. As a cherished friend and mentor, I have lost a great friend. Cecil's Department has picked up and is proving that he taught them how to "carry on" in his footsteps. As an officer that worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and never tired, he now has a chance to rest. I know in my heart that he is not retired, but patrolling the halls of heaven. I look forward to seeing him again. May God reward him as he deserves, and may God look after his family in their times of need. See you soon, friend.

I am Cecils son in law. I only knew Cecil for about five years, and in that period of time I gained a great and deep love and respect for him. He was the most selfless person, next to his daughter that I have ever known. He was always looking out for you and making sure you were alright. My kids loved their grandpa so much, the mention of his name brought smiles to their faces. The legacy and the lessons he left will without question help me and my family lead lives of service and love. Cecil, I still can't believe your gone. I can never thank you enough for raising Shalon to become the person she is. She is definitly my better half. I'm a better person because of her and because of you. I'll always love and remember what an awsome awsome father to were to me. You made me feel loved and accepted from day one. I never forget you- I love you

I attended Chief Gurr's service last month. I had the honor of attending that service with Joe Adams, who also ended his watch by gunfire. Joe ended his watch on 08-04-01. We talked about the service after we had returned home and were on shift together. We thought that the service was awesome and that it had done a good man justice. I was proud to have been in that procession, as was Joe. I don't think either of us thought that we would be losing one of our own so soon. I can tell you one thing, between Chief Gurr and Patrolman Adams, there has got to be one hell of police department in heaven.
Joe was my friend and my brother, we felt the deepest sympathy when Chief Gurr gave the ultimate sacrifice.
We wondered how Police Departments go on after losing someone, and now I struggle to go on with the job after losing one of our own.
I salute Roosevelt Police Department on their resilience. I thank them for the great service honoring their fallen Chief, I am sure that he saw it all and even held the rain off just enough to let the service conclude.

I only had the pleasure of working with Chief Gurr on two separate occasions but I felt that he was a fair, honest man. He seemed genuinely concerned about his small town of Roosevelt and the people who lived and worked there. I also know that his department grieves for him daily and he will be greatly missed by them.

In July 1978, I was hired by Chief Gurr as a rookie officer by the Roosevelt City Police Dept. In the following 2 years that I worked with Chief Gurr, I developed a deep respect for him and knew that he was a great leader.

Approximately 3 weeks prior to his death, my wife and I traveled back to Roosevelt to take some pictures of the homes we had lived in while we were employed there. Cecil invited me into his office and for the next 15 minutes I had his undivided attention, as he conversed with me and asked about my family. I will always cherish this special time.

I love you Cecil and I will remember you always.

Chief, you saved my life...the hard way. Long before you gave your live for others, you saved mine with your friendship, love, and loyalty. When I didn't think I would last one more hour, you were there. I'm so very sorry I couldn't express this fully to you. You are the greatest person I have ever met. Dedicated, loyal, loving, honest, caring, persistent, determined. Truly, a great American hero!! My deepest sympathy to you Lynette, Dax, Shalon, Slade. You are all very wonderful people! I'm sure Chief Gurr is now in God's paradise.

A better tribute could not be made to Chief Cecil Gurr than to see his Officers pull themselves together one step at time and begin going back on the street. Each of these Officers are responding to the inner strength that CHIEF saw/sees in them, but as importantly right now they are emulating his example. Each of these Officers deserve the utmost in respect and compassion. Chief Gurr has provided a lasting legacy for the City of Roosevelt and for Law Enforcement in general.

Anything that I could say in addition to this, has already been more eloquantly said.

Until later my friend.........

On behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #1, our deepest heartfelt condolences on this tragic loss. We will always remember your dedication, bravery, and ultimate sacrifice to protect our Nation and your community. This service was not in vain, for it displayed uncommon valor in this collective effort to free our Nation of the evil that exists in our world today.
"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name will trust in you, for you Lord have never forsaken those who seek you." Psalm 9:9-10

Never having had the pleasure to meet Cecil, it is very apparent from the number of reflections posted prior to mine that Cheif Gurr was a cop's cop, & great man, a true man of honor. It's sad to hear of his violent & tragic death, and at the hands of someone who had absolutely no regard for human life whatsoever. Not many Chief's actually respond to calls for service with the officers they command, but in a small community such as Roosevelt City, it sounds like that was the norm rather than the exception.

May God's comforting hand be with those who mourn in their time of need & grief. The Lord must have needed Cecil for a greater purpose, but I know that he is in the hollow of His hand.

To the members of the Roosevelt PD family, stay safe, & keep your heads up... This too shall pass.

This man was a great man, a great police officer, and a great friend. I could never be more proud. But first and most, he is a Father and a "DaBa." I will forever be dancing on your shoes.

I am deeply saddened to think of the time I took for granted with you. However, I feel blessed to know that your goodness lives on through my husband. He is a man of integrity and compassion because you were. I am soon to have two sons that bear your name. I promise to teach them to do so with pride and to carry your example on to those around them, especially their children. I will miss you, but everyday will remember you and the love that was felt in your presence. I love you. 'Til we meet again!

Chief Gurr, you served our great nation with Valor, you gave in a hell known to many as Vietnam, then you came home and set aside those memories, to help the citizens of your community. Not a soul whom you touched will ever forget your courage and commitment. I pray that God lifts the sad hearts of those in your family, and your comrades, and that your wishes and work live on daily as though you were still there....

I worked with Chief Gurr for 12 1/2 years. I believe there was no greater boss. You did not work for Chief, you worked with Chief. He was my best friend. After leaving RPD, I either spoke to him or we emailed weekly.

Chief Gurr was a true leader, and was respected by all. I will miss him.

I worked for Chief Gurr as a patrolman In the mid 80s. He was one of the most honorable men I have ever known and always stood behind his officers 100%. To this day he remains an important role model to me and has always exemplified to me what it meant to be a leader. My condolences to his family and I hope that it will ease their pain just a little to know how truely respected he was by both the officers who served under him and by the community he served.
