Reflections for Master Sergeant Stanley W. Talbot

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was just thinking about the good old days and thought I had better pay a visit. That horrible night seems just like yesterday as I can recite word for word of that night. I know you are patroling the highways up in heaven and look down on your family and smile! Rest in peace Stanley!

Thinking of you today and what would have been. You would be so proud of your kids. Both are outstanding police officers and kind, compassionate, people. They are wonderful parents and your grandchildren have strong Talbot looks. All is well 7-4, rest in peace.

In loving memory of M/S Stanley
Talbot: We are at the 2 year mark and I hope it has gotten easier for
your family and friends. You died
such a violent death and you were
so close to retirement after serving
faithfully for so many years. Even
with the passage of time your memory will not be erased and our hats are off to you for your dedicated
service. May God continue to be
close to all those still grieving. We
honor you today for your supreme
sacrifice.

You were another Warrior that was brought home on his shield after battle. I wanted to stop in and say that you will never be forgotten by the Blue Family nor your own family and friends. May God be with you and watch over your family. Should run into my son Michael, please tell him I love him and miss him.

Stan you were my friend and classmate at the training institute at the University of Illinois during the spring and summer of 1973. I will always remember you as the one who should have won the "Earl H. Warren" award, because your entire career you were truly the example what a Police Officer should be. Stan you are a hero, and my thoughts a prayers are with your family, and co-workers.

It is so hard to think that you were taken from us 2 years ago today. I know Jenny and I will never forget that horrible night, but we still chuckle as we think about the good ole "Stan Talbot" way of doing things.
We also know that you would be very proud of your daughter Dyan. We can sure tell that she is a product of your policing methods!
Rest in peace "7-4"

I am so sorry for the family of this faithful servant of the people.........It is a shame that one person did not show a police officer the respect he deserves....they have names for people like that........they call them COWARDS.
Honor and respect to MSgt. Talbot...his Family.....and The Illinois State Police.
S.A. Wilson
I was working patrol in Henry County the night M/S Talbot was taken from us. I remember hearing radio traffic from the detail he was working. Then all of a sudden things got crazy... I just knew something went horribly wrong. I found out sometime later that M/S Talbot was killed.
I have worked several details with M/S Talbot as well as assisting him with accidents, etc. He would always tell me "be careful out there". He was, and still is an inspiration to me and many other Officers that had the privilege of working with him. Rest in Peace Brother...
May God be with LaDonna and Dyan during their tours of duty.

Stan I miss you and I'm sorry I wasn't there. Dyan will carry the legacy you left. I'm just now starting my law enforcement career, and I hope you protect me, and all other officers. I pray for you, your wife, and your daughter. MRH

M/Sgt. Talbot you answered every call given to you even this, the toughest one of your career, from a higher power but always with a smile and a great attitude.
Thanks for being a great role model for many young troopers. Your final 402.

We miss you so much. To say that things are not the same without you is an understatement. I cannot and will not ever be able to forget working the night you died. We did all we could to help you but it all happened so fast and it was over before we even knew what was happening to you. I am so sorry.
I only got to work with you for my one short year here so far, but I just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful memories. You would be so proud of Dyan. She's half way done at the academy now and will be coming here to district 7. I know you're watching over all of us and are smiling down with your big grin. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for being a great friend and boss. I will always remember you.
