Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Joseph Thomas Cushman

Dearest Joey,
It is after 1 a.m., but I just spent the
most enjoyable time reading about
the great person that you are and the
wonderful life that you led.
According to these reflections
you are with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. There is none greater than He. We don't get to Heaven based on what we do, but what He did for us!! AMEN! Thank you for your fine example to those that worked with you and knew you. There is now a huge void that cannot be filled, but as you are remembered, thoughts will
turn to your exemplary life and we will be filled with pride and respect
and love for the man you became. You were a wonderful testimony to
the Lord you served. God be with all those who mourn and may His
promises lift all those with heavy hearts for many years to come.
Thank you for your wonderful years of
service and your supreme sacrifice.
I can't wait to meet you in Heaven.
I thank God for your precious life!!!
Love In Christ,

Lynn Kole

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Corporal Cushman. It is tragic to see that another young officer has left this earthly home.

I often visit this site after the loss of two very dear friends from the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

I hope you find some comfort in knowing that prayers continue to go out for your family. God Bless You.

I miss you brother. I was thinking alot about the academy and all the fun we had back then. It seems like yesterday when we were playing racquetball with each other and going to Cowboys. I wish you were still here. The day we made Corporal was a special day. You would have been the best FTO that anyone could have ever been trained by. I hope you hear me when I talk to you and I hope your still laughing. I know I smile everytime I think about you. You were the best of Class 12 and you will always be remembered as such.

As I read the reflections left by many people who knew this man I cannot help but shed a tear. Officer Cushman sounds like a wonderful man and friend. He did so much to help others around him. Truely incredible! I have lost many people very close to me over the years that have left us much too early in their lives. I wish I had gotten the chance to get to know one more.

God Bless!

Joey -

I was doing homework with the music player on my computer on random, when the Green Day song came on. Little reminders like that pop up all the time.
I wanted to tell you we had an excellent time in Mexico. Several times, when we would have profound, moving experiences (with the locals or with each other) that made me think about being part of something bigger, butterflies circled the worksite. I knew then that you were there.
Now, with 2 years having passed, it has been long enough for the changes you instilled in us to be apparent. The certain softness and kindness you taught to us all pop out obviously at times. I know you have not left us, and you are always on our minds and in our hearts. Rest in peace.

Cpl. Cushman was one of my instructors when I was in the academy, and even though I didn’t know him long he had a huge impact in my life. He helped teach my firearms course, and no matter how bad the weather on the range was he always had a smile on his face. Cushman was able to find a positive in everything he did, and he was always striving to better himself along with those around him. Any time you needed something Joey was there giving all that he had. I hope and pray that I can be half the officer Cushman was.

Another one of our Brothers had been taken from us. May he be remembered now and forever as he was as an active honerable cop! My heartfelt sympathies to all the brothers and sisters who have gone before him. May they all rest in peace. To those of us who still walk the beat, and are daily endangered, May GOD walk with us and may Officer Cushman, my dearest friend and companion Jason Lopez, who recently lost inlife here in Arizona, look over us while we try to fill in their shoes. God Bless

Though I never got emotionally close to Joey due to different shifts and our age differences (I am 20 years older than Joey), he still treated me as an equal. Every time I saw him at shift change or at a volunteer get together, he always shook my hand or touched me on the arm and asked how I was doing. I was always amazed at the energy and drive that this "kid" had. I'd tell him that he needed to slow down or he'd burn out and he would say "Mike, I don't have time. I have too much to do". I guess he knew his time here with us was short and God was waiting for him. Now Joey is volunteering and coordinating things for God. Thanks Joey for being here and a part of our lives.

It is comforting to know that you will be leading the angels who watch over us as we continue our work here on Earth. Thanks for being such an outstanding friend, officer and example to so many. We will miss you terribly Joey.

This is the saddest story that i gave heard about in a long time. I could not imagine this happening to my great husband, who has been in law enforcement for 14yrs now. Our prayers go out to his family and also to the other officer that accidently shot him. My god bring peace in your lives real soon. Thanks, Jena Sims

There are no words that can express the loss that the friends, family and the DFW community are suffering because of the unfortunate accident that occurred 6/07/01 involving Cpl. Cushman. There are only few words that can come close in describing his character and that is "one of great integrity" as a person, an officer and as a friend. As I told him when I last saw him "Joey, you are not even aware of the lives you have touched!" Save a dance for me, Joey. You are and will always be missed!

You were a good friend and beat partner and an even better example for us all. We'll miss you buddy. See you at 10-7.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Corporal Cushman's Family, the Arlington Police Department, and to Officer Shaw. May god give all of you the strength to pull through this terrible ordeal.

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Joeys Life ended before it really got started.I've experenced this so i know the pain. Practically every Police Officer who is killed involves some sort of accident. The cause is'nt as important as to why did it have to happen? Joeys spirit will never die.I feel sorry for his family and friends. I always get a sick feeling when i read about an officers death. I hope everyone will say prayers for the people suffering the loss of Joey. Kenny

Two years have gone by quickly. You are most definitely not forgotten, Joey. You were with us at camp and everyone who knew you felt it..we even flew next to the buses, just for you! I see so much of you in others, because of the person you were and the person that you challenged others to be. I miss you but know that you are watching over us and serving Him in heaven as you did on earth..

Joey, my brother from another mother.

I am going to make this one short....
It's been two years now. It is so hard to believe that you have been
gone for exactly two years, I just got back from the most incredible
experience at Anytown where you were greatly missed by many but all
knew you were there. I met so many people who had you in them
because of your influence in them so much, and I love them so much
now. I love you so much. Joey- you have been gone two years, two
years never once forgotten, two years your spirit still alive in our hearts.

Anne, your little sis 6/7/03
