I'm very sorry about the loss of Sgt. Myron G. Deckard. My prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow officers. He was senslessly killed for no reason. Thank you, Sgt. Deckard, for laying down your life so all citizens could be safe. To his family and friends, please be comforted that Sgt. Deckard leaves behind a legacy of dedication, service, and sacrifice. This legacy is something that will inspire young men and women each day to become police officers.
God be with you all.

Sergeant Deckard was the best of friends. Warm, fun-loving, and energetic, with a passion for his work that never quit. He was the youngest 72 year old I ever knew. Myron would give any friend the shirt off his back. A great guy, we will sorely miss him! Our condolences to all his family and friends.

Idaho State Police

Even though it was a brief meeting,it was truly an Honor to meet a Dedicated Officer such as was Sergeant Deckard.

Lord Bless and keep you and yours.

ABSOLUTE JUSTICE!!
- D.R. was found GUILTY and sentenced to death.

Sergeant, you are missed more everyday, your legacy continues and always will. We all continue everyday knowing that you are watching over us from above, though we wish you where here, we cannot be that selfish, as God needed you with Him. May your soul now rest peacefully, knowing the judicial system did not fail.

I never called Sgt. Deckard "Myron." We always knew him as Uncle Butch. He was there when I was born and I used to part of my summers with him and his wife Jeannie. They would take me and my sisters and brothers camping and to the circus and for rides on their motorcycles. He was my godfather and was instrumental in convincing my brother to become an Indiana State Police Officer. My husband was a Sgt. with the Vigo Co. Sheriff's Department and was killed in the line of duty. Uncle Butch was there for me and did all he could for me and my two small children. I miss you Butch and God watch over Jeannie and Tony. Love, Linda Artz

It has been my honor to know Myron since I was a child. I later worked for him and still think of him everyday. I keep a picture of Myron on my office wall to remind myself and my officers of true dedication and love of life.
Now that the one year anniversary of the end of watch approaches, the pain is just as great today as it was on 6-6 when the tragic news of County 6 came out.
I quote Myron everytime I meet with new officers "If you're a cop, and a good one, you're going to make someone mad in every action you take. If you want everyone to love you, be a fireman". Myron, EVERYONE LOVED YOU!!
We still miss you Uncle Butch!!

I've known Myron Deckard since becoming a police officer in 1992. Myron always had time to visit and help his fellow police officers. I've never met a person that was so devoted to his job, and doing his job to the best of his abilities. I know that Myron is missed deeply by his many friends and family, but I also know that he is still with us in our hearts and is still watching our backs. There will never be another like Sgt. Myron Deckard.

To the family of Sgt. Deckard I would like to say that I am sorry to hear of his passing. My brother is a police officer in Danville and he took it very hard as did all the officers in the area. Sgt. Deckard made a lasting impression on everyone in law enforcement and he will be sadly missed. To all the officers out there thank you for all you do and rest assured that from Heaven Sgt. Deckard will be watching your SIX.

SGT. DECKARD,
AS THE HOLIDAYS NEAR I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK OF YOU AND ALSO YOUR FAMILY. YOU ARE STILL HONORED EVERY DAY FROM THE #6 ON OUR PATROL CARS, YOUR PLAQUE NOW HANGING IN THE P.S.B. LOBBY FOR EVERYONE TO SEE, AND THE CEREMONIES HONORING YOUR DEDICATION TO THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY. SGT. YOU WERE EVEN HONORED AT MACON COUNTIES LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARDS BANQUET (THANK YOU MACON COUNTY FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF OUR DEAR FRIEND). THIS ALL SEEMS LIKE A BAD DREAM STILL, BUT WE STILL CONTINUE ON IN YOUR HONOR AS YOU WOULD WANT US TO. WE DO FIND STRENGTH KNOWING THAT YOU ARE NOW IN A BETTER PLACE AND KNOWING THAT YOU ARE THERE WATCHING OVER US AND KEEPING US SAFE. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE LOSS STILL BEING FELT BY YOUR FAMILY BUT REST ASSURED THEY KNOW THEY HAVE THE CONTINUED SUPPORT OF THE VERMILION COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY TO HELP THEM CARRY THE GRIEF.
THINKING OF YOU MY FRIEND EVERY DAY!

I am very honored to have considered Myron a friend and co-instructor for over 20 years.

Myself and the other Firearms Instructors from the Illinois Training Board Mobile Team #13 here in East Central Illinois will greatly miss Myron.

We have taught hundreds of Illinois officers during these years and although these students may not remember our names, they would surely remember Myron for his wit and the wealth of information that he always seemed to come up with. Myron would always joke and cut up with the best of us but when it came to the job or his duty, he was always professional.

I will always carry memories of some of our "antics" (which are better left unsaid), and the dedication that Myron always showed to his duty.

Farewell old friend and keep an eye on our back from up there

Myron was always willing to take that extra step and do what was necessary.

Captain Brian Janes
Mattoon IL Police Department

I have taught firearms along side Myron Decker for many years. I knew him as a brother officer and a friend. He was always quick to help others and truly loved law enforcement. Myron was always reading articles and passing along the latest information on equipment or training to help other officers stay sharp. Myron gave the better part of his life to law enforcement, and ultimately gave his VERY LIFE for the public he served so proudly. Myron will be sadly missed by comrades and friends.

Sergeant Mark D. Payne
Tuscola Police Department

I remember my first night as a Vermilion County Deputy when I went with Myron to serve a warrant, and I will never forget the great love and enthusiasm which he had for his work. It was the only thing he wanted to do and he did it better than anyone else.
Myron never complained or had anything bad to say about anyone. He was a great role model on how to give your all to your work, and that is something I will carry with me every day for the rest of my life.
Even though I changed departments Myron still kept in touch and was always available to help with whatever information he could. I was on vacation out of state when this tragedy took place and I will never be able to forgive myself for not being there to honor a great Deputy and a great man.
To Myrons' family I can only hope you will always know what a great person and what wonderful things Myron did for all of us who were blessed to work with him. To my brothers at the Vermilion County Sheriff's Department, I share your pain and even though I am no longer there, you are still my family.
God bless you Myron for all you were to me and everyone else, and know you will never be forgotten.
10-42 Vermilion 6, my friend...

Sgt. Deckard,
I am sorry it took so long to post this letter but I was at a loss of words and the pain was tremendous to look up this sight. I would like to thank you for everything you have done for me. Thank you for all the wonderful memories I have of you. Thank you for showing me the ropes on warrant hunting and all those silly jokes you would tell me when I would see you. Thank you for calling me and waking me up all those times just to tell me to get out of bed and watch some law enforcement related event on tv. Thank you for the birthday cake you provided last November during the Marine Corps birthday. I will cherish your memory and hold them near my heart. I am very blessed to have worked with you and to be able to call you a good friend. Your departure has left a terrible void in the department but we will do our best to press on in your memory. There is not a second that goes by that I don't think of you. Your devotion to the department and your family life was exemplerary. The wonderful memories are by far too much to list. I love you with all my heart and will do my best in this job to bring honor to God, VCSD, and to your memory. Thank you for being my friend.

I would like to express my thanks to everyone who has posted to this site. I can not begin to tell you how proud I am of my brother. My brother was my best friend, and always looked out for me. He devoted his life to law enforcement, and in the end died for it. I cannot begin to tell my feelings when I seen the outpouring of love and support for him at his funeral, from not only his colleagues but the people of Danville, whom he served. I want to thank all the officers (too numerous to mention each one) who spoke to me at his funeral and told me some stories of his career. I know he enjoyed every day that he worked with them. I especially want to thank Sheriff Pat Hartshorn for everything he did for the family. I know that Butch touched many peoples lives and that makes me extremely proud of him. I will miss him calling to check on me and make sure of how my family and I are doing but I know he is in a better place. This certainly proves that you can never ever let your guard down because even the ones that you would never expect to be violent can dangerous. God Bless all the Police Officers in their duties.

Again our family's heartfelt thanks.

Larry Deckard (Brother of Myron G Deckard)
