I am not a police officer or a family member or even someone who knew Officer Williams but she put her life on the line for me and others like me everyday and want those who knew and loved her to know that even those of us who didnt know her are aware of the great sacrifice she made for us. God bless her soul and I am sure heaven is an even nicer place with her there ....A Citizen

I have officially been a member of the Family for 3 years, though because of my husband, 7 years. I used to wonder why he cried when a fellow Officer died. Now I feel the same pain when a brother or sister falls. Our heartfelt love goes out to Sherry's family and to all that have served with her. She shall live forever in our hearts.

Deputy Ramona Cloer and Husband
Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office

I am not a police officer but just wanted a place to express my sympathy to this Officer's family, both "real" and her extended family. I know all Officers feel the loss. The death of any law enforcement officer touches me so deeply because I am aware that I owe my very life to you all each and every day. Thank you all for EVERYTHING you do and please know that I am praying for Investigator Williams' family....and for all of you every day. Thank you all!

Just a citizen

My family and I would like to send out our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers. It is frustrating to hear/see things of this nature. I hope and pray things will change as they often do; only for the better this time. Good luck and please stay safe.

I grew up with Sherry Lyons. We all called her Sherry Lyons, never just Sherry. We attended school in the Pike County School System from kindergarten to twelfth grade and graduated in 1979. That was back when the school system was so small that we all just knew each other. Nobody moved in to the system and nobody moved away. We were all just there together, as a family.

Sherry Lyons grew up poor and in the country, just as I did. When I see her looking at me from the front page of the Atlanta paper today, I wonder what in the world she was doing in the big city...and a police officer, no less. I'm so proud of her. The house where she grew up was just down the country road from where my daddy owned a block-house grocery store. Her house was just across the street from where I went to church...where five generations of my own family were baptized. Where the men and women sat on opposite sides of the church. The divider is still down the middle of the pews.

I can still see her sitting on the bank of the pond next to her house fishing.

Sherry and her family would walk down the road to the store. She was always so quiet, but always had a smile on her face, even when she wasn't actually smiling. She was just such a gentle person that the smile never went away. She was only 39. She came so far in 39 years. How honorable to die doing something so noble.

There is far too much hate and evil in the world. The devil has too much rein. I used to be ashamed to have grown up so far in the country. I was so excited to graduate, go to college and move away. It wasn't long before I started the desperate struggle to get back.

The more I see of the world, the more I see the evil that happens to good, salt-of-the-earth people like Sherry Lyons, the more proud I am of where we both came from. Today I'm especially proud of Sherry Lyons. I wish I could tell her so.

Through all the pain, all the anger, and all the tears; there is joy, joy for one of our sisters has been called home. Though the joy may not been felt or seen now, there is a silver lining in the clouds of pain, and one day we shall all understand. My thoughts and prayers are with all of APD. God bless you all.

I am the Mom of Atlanta Police Officer John Richard Sowa, killed in the LOD on 10/12/97. I know only too well what you, the family, are going through. Our family extends it heartfelt sympathy to the husband of Officer Sherry Lyons-Williams and to all her siblings and to her other family members. She was doing something that she loved best and in all of your hearts you will remember this beautiful young lady and the wonderful things that she has done as a police officer. God Bless each and everyone of you.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Investigator Sherry Lyons-Williams and her family and those of her partners. I couldn't believe my ears yesterday when I heard of the shooting from an Officer. Investigator Williams died doing what she loved best, and that was protecting and serving the people of the City of Atlanta, she will not be forgotten.

ONE WOULD HAVE TO BE FEARLESS AS YOU TO DO A JOB SO DEMANDING. MAY GOD COMFORT YOUR FAMILY AND MAY YOUR FEARLESSNESS AND MEMORY REMAIN IN ALL OUR LIVES.

I would like to express my condolence for the Williams family as well as the entire Atlanta Police family, You have my deepest sorrows. I have experinced the hurt and pain of losing fellow officers in the past. I truly understand how difficult it is to deal with. Sometimes in this job we take things for granted and treat our fellow officers with disrespect and a lack of sensitity. It should not take a time like this to make us come together and reflect that deep down we are all just one. "ONE THIN BLUE LINE".

Anyone that knew Sherry knows that she lost her life doing what she enjoyed the most. We love you Sherry and you will be missed.

I served with Sherry Lyons-Williams from 1995-1996 in the United States Army Reserve, where she was a 71D Legal Specialist for our unit. SPC Lyons was at all times an outstanding soldier and a credit to the U.S. Army. She always set the example in every aspect and exemplified excellence in her personal and professional life. It is an honor to have had the privilege of serving with her and it is simply not possible to express in words the depth of loss that will be felt by all who knew her and who have been touched by her life and her leadership.

CPT Timothy M. Klob
United States Army Reserve

My thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of Inv Williams. Her dedication to her profession till the end is not only a attribute to her but for all those who have broken down the doors to injustice. May her co-workers and friends be at ease that she is with the ultimate peace keeper.
