Reflections for Master Police Officer Steven J. Underwood

This is the hardest day of the year. I miss you brother.

I knew Steve way before he was a L.E.O. We worked several years together at Bartell's on Pac. Hwy (Des Moines), 3rd & Union, the Ave., and Tukwila.
I remember he always talked about wanting to be an officer. It was his dream job. He loved many things about life that we all do. He left way, way, way too early!!!!!!

Gone but not forgotten. I saw a plaque today on facebook for you...Made me think, in 2001 we all would have said "what’s facebook", how time changes a lot of things. I did not know you, but I attended you funeral as a police explorer. I will never forget that day. RIP brother

Steve, I thought of you today while working on a paper for school on the criminal system. You were a perfect example of what an officer should be and I wrote my paper on what happened after you left us. Thanks for the inspiration, both before you were taken and after. Merry Christmas.

Ten years have passed and I often think of you and your lovely family. You were the kind of police officer every Chief of Police hopes for. Proud of your career and the department you served, kind and caring to the public you served, integrity beyond question and a shining example of what the uniform and badge stand for. A loving husband, father, brother, son and friend to all.

It was so tragic when you were killed, I felt so badly for your wife and very young son, who wouldn't get to have you in his life anymore. I hope that time has healed some of the grief and pain your friends and family experienced. I also hope that they have found good ways to make sure your son knows you through their memories. With all the senseless murders of police officers in the Seattle area in recent months, I have been thinking of you, too, and am grateful for your service.

I can't believe it has already been 8 years Steve. We can't drive by the spot on Pac Hwy and not think of you and your family. We think of your family often, especially your wife, son and mom. Our son was a baby when you died and I still remember being at your funeral and seeing your son playing, not really realizing the impact of what was happening. It broke our hearts. Each officer that falls we think of you. Thanks for serving, for the goofy jokes, and the good old times.

The events this week in Seattle bring back all the bad memories of that morning in March 2001. Been thinking about you alot and how your family is doing.

You're still my backup. Keep watch over all of us.

Rest In Peace Brother! You will not be forgotten.

Day is done,
gone the sun,
from the lakes from the hills from the sky,
all is well,
safely, rest,
God is near.

Fading light,
Dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky Gleaming bright,
From afar,
Drawing, near,
Falls the night.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
Neath the sun
Neath the stars
Neath the sky,
As we go,
This, we, know,
God is near.
