Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff James Michael Salvino, Jr.

I never had the oppurtunity to meet you, I started working there long after you passed...but I have heard nothing but good things about you.
Thinking of ya on this day...keep watch over us Sal as we continue the work.
It may have been 8 years since that horrible day, but you are not forgotten brother, and still missed by all.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office

My thoughts and prayers are with your loved ones and friends on this anniversary of your EOW. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You will never be forgotten.

To the family and loved ones of Deputy James Salvino:

I wanted to honor and remember Sal today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Sal, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by friends. His valor and service will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry that Sal was robbed of his life so young, but through the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Sal gave to his community and the citizens of Ohio, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 17, 2001.

I worked with James Salvino Jr. and I also knew his father. I worked first with James as a Corrections Officer and then as he became a Deputy Sheriff. James was kind and one of the most friendly people you would ever meet. I could hardly believe it when I heard he had been killed in the accident. The entire Justice Center was in mourning. I miss him and his spirit. When I look at his picture I can still see him at roll call, I guess now he's standing a different type of roll call.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Part of my routine after our post meetings is to go down to the vending machines on P1. Along the way, I see the memorial plaque dedicated to Deputy Salvino. I think about his service and sacrafice. It is a solemn moment. I hope to get into law enforcement someday so I can help keep the memories of fallen officers alive.

You are the reason I want to become a Deputy at the department. Everytime I am in the justice center I have to look and your picture. I hate to see an officer go down. You will not be forgotten. You are a great man.
