Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

Yes, that was Dougs' daughter. She talks about that ride often and asks when we attend local events if she will get to take a ride on a "big motorcycle" again! She will be in DC again this May with the hopes of getting another ride at that "great picnic in the park". We hope to see you there! She will turn 8 on May 27 this year, and is having a hard time with her dads murder. She was only 7 months old at the time he was shot and killed, and is now experiencing the pain of "not knowing him". She is really looking forward to the trip and going with the other C.O.P.S. kids to their activities.. Thank you for your kind words, they mean alot. I am very proud of her.

A couple of years ago I attended a COPS picnic for the suvivors of fallen officers as a member of the Blue Knights. This was the first I had participated in one of these functions.

We were there and enjoying the activity when we started giving the suvivors rides on the motorcycles. I had the honor to have a little girl who I think was Detective Jacobs daughter ride with me.

When we finished the ride she presented me with a badge and said this was my Daddy's badge.

This little girl in her tender kindness gave me a gift that I will never forget in presenting me with this badge.

She should be maybe 7 or 8 now and her mother should be proud of the kindness and strength this little girl has been given by her fallen father and mother.

I just wanted to thank her for the gift she gave me and let her know that the little bagde she gave me is always with me. Along with the memory of that beautiful, kind and innocent face.

I can't believe it has been seven years since you were taken from us. I know you are still with us in so many ways, I only wish you were able to enjoy Rachel the way we all do . She is such a blessing, but how could she not be. Tammy is doing well and I am just as proud of her. It has been tough but like so many others in this crazy world we are survivors I know it has been with the help of God and all of you angels in blue. Jeremy is now a full time officer for the Lynchburg P.D. here in Ohio I know he got his inspiration from you. I just want you to know that in the short time we had you in our lives how much we came to Love and Respect You. I know we will all see you again someday. Daddy, I wish you were here to hold me and play with me. I think about what it would be like to have you here with me. I am mad because everyone else knows you and I dont. Im doing very good in school, you would be proud of my grades. I went to C.O.P.S. kids camp last summer for the first time. I caught a 4 inch blue gill..you would be proud of me. I sang last year at the Riv Co Memorial. I am singing Sunday in church and dedicating it to you. We are going out to lunch and then to the cemetary to see you and take flowers. "The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Doug,

I was in DC last week for the National Memorial. I visited your name and reflected on all the good times we had together. I bought a Doug Jacobs shirt from ODMP. I had to replace it with the original shirt because the old one was so tattered. I will continue to wear it proudly. I still vividly remember all those times we hung out after work at your house off Streeter. You were a great friend to me and I appreciate you as a cop, a friend and a great human being. I miss you brother.

I wanted your family to know a little bit more about you. I am sure it will not be news to them but here it goes. I once responded to a fight involving a Deputy and inmate in the clinic of MCJ. Out of all the deputies who responded and got involved, Doug was the only one who impressed me with his ability to handle a situation. He immediately took control and handled the inmate quite well. Unfortunately, somehow the force which was used got blown out of proportion by civilian bystanders. Before we even had a chance to report it (as the inmate required 4 point restraints)and we were in the process of handling that, three of us got called out to the Watch Commander to explain. Doug was the O.G. of the three of us, as us other two were boots (new Deputies). Myself and the other deputy who I will call "Vegas" were scared to death thinking we screwed up somehow. We knew the Watch Commander was peeved as we could hear his yelling through the closed door. Doug was able to calmly walk into that office and converse with the WC about what actually occurred. Everything turned out fine, as we did nothing wrong, but that didn't stop us boots from being scared of what was going to happen. The whole time Doug told us not to worry about a thing and he would handle it. At a time when new deps were not treated very well, Doug was not of that mold. He comforted us with reassurance that all would be okay, and to his word, it was. I would always remember Doug for that, He will always be remembered by me as someone who truly cared. I will always have fond memories of Doug. I wish I could have gotten to know him better as I believe he had so much to offer as a friend. I know his family will always be proud of him. I wanted all of you to know, Doug was special even to those of us he just brushed. Rest In Peace my brother.

I had the pleasure of meeting Doug's daughter today at the C.O.P.S. Kids gathering at the FBI National Academy. As I was handing out pins to kids, I was given a pin that was Dou's badge. It was a very emotional day, and this was just an unbelievable gesture by a remarkable young lady. I will treasure it along with the memories of the day. I have no doubt that Doug must have been a remarkable person, as I can see it through the strength and wisdom of his daughter.

I WORKED CUSTODY AT MEN'S CENTRAL JAIL WITH DOUG IN THE EARLY 90'S. I WOKE UP THIS MORNING AND OUT OF THE BLUE DID A WEB SEARCH FOR HIM. I KNEW HE HAD BEEN KILLED AND I HADNT TALKED TO HIM SINCE I WENT TO PATROL, ALMOST 12 YEARS AGO. DOUG WAS A GOOD DUDE AND ALTHOUGH I HADN'T TALKED TO HIM IN YEARS, I GUESS I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I MISS HIM, AND HE'S NOT FORGOTTEN.

I can't believe that its been over 5 years since you were taken from us.
There isn't a day that goes by that we don't think of you. On Jan 13th I took the kids to Olivewood. Lexi brought you a stuffed dog and AJ wanted to get you some balloons. Loosing you in such a tragic way, leaves us all wondering why. I hope that you can see how your wife has stepped up to love and encourage other wives and family who have also lost. I'm so sorry you were cheated out of your Daughter knowing you, and being able to raise her and your Son. That is truly heartbreaking.
