My first ride-along was with Doug Jacobs, he was a rookie cop and I was a rookie Crime Analyst. We established a friendship that day. A few months after leaving Riverside Police Department for San Bernardino County Sheriff, Doug was killed in the line of duty. His funeral was amazing and a true honor to the man he was. I will always cherish my memory of him when we were both new to the world of Law Enforcement.

NEVER FORGOTTEN!
On Saturday, January 13, 2001, Detective Doug Jacobs, III of the Riverside California Police Department, was shot and killed when he was ambushed after he and another officer responded to a noise complaint. The officers were interviewing two of the individuals, a mother and son, on an outside staircase when a second son exited the residence and opened fire on them with a 9 mm handgun. One of the two rounds struck Detective Jacobs in the head. The murderer re-entered his residence and attempted to load a rifle, which jammed. The coward surrendered moments later. The murderer was convicted of several charges, including the murder of Detective Jacobs. The jury recommended a sentence of death. Detective Jacobs is survived by his wife, six-month-old daughter, and ten-year-old stepson. God bless you and your family Detective Jacobs. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Doug you were and always will be a great friend and colleague. I was just about to get off duty when I heard your beat partner put out an 11-99, officer down/needs assistance call. I remember feeling my heart sink to the pit of my stomach, thinking, I had just talked with you a few minutes earlier. You couldn't have been the officer that was down and in need of assistance. I remember, throwing my vest, uniform and police gear back on as quick as I could and jumping into a police unit and rolling code-3 to your location. When I arrived, I saw the paramedics brining you down a flight of stairs from the top of the second story residence/duplex. I couldn't believe it was you laying on the ambulance stretcher. I had tears rolling down my face trying to keep my composure. But it was hard I couldn't stop crying. I said, a quick prayer to god that you would be ok, but he had other plans for you on that fateful day. I want to thank you for being such a good friend and a great police officer that had great tact and judgment while performing your duties as a law en-for cement officer. Thank you for backing me up on a lot of my traffic enforcement stops and assisting me with numerous arrests in the downtown area of Riverside Ca. A lot of the officers from the college still miss you because you didn't treat us different. God speed, I will see you one day on the other side.
