Eric, Everytime that I see your picture on this page I go back to the days of highschool and all of the mischief we got into. I'm always going to remember you as Amy's kid brother (knucklebrain!) but more so, I'm going to remember you as a friend that was taken way too soon. I still raise a glass to you and hope that you and your family know that it doesnt matter how much time passes, we will never forget you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Not a day goes by that I am at work that I do not talk to you. Every time I go through a door, every time I stop a car...I know you are the angel on my shoulder. There are no words that describe the feeling of loss we all have. Days, months, years...time does not heal wounds, but you learn to accept. Please welcome those who go before us, and continue to watch over us.

Eric, I'll never ever forget that tragic day as I received a phone call at my residence telling me what just occurred. I was actually putting on my uniform to come to work on 2nd shift that day. Once I got the news, I turned on my radio as I rushed to get ready. As I was listening to what was transpiring, I had so many emotions. At first I was numb, thinking this can not be happening, then I was just so sad and then angry.
As I went 10-8, I felt so helpless in many ways. I was listening to the radio to get all the BOLO info that I could, but it was a confusing situation. Shortly after I went 10-8, I found out the suspect was arrested in another county.
Please know that I think about you often, and many times I salute you when I pass the location on Woodruff Rd. where this senseless tragedy occurred. C-181 will always be remembered as a HERO. To my brother in gray, rest in peace and we'll take it from here.

Eric I hope you had fun watching over our High School Reunion last weekend. We all miss you and love you. Your mom came and it was nice to see her. I know it would have been better to have you there but to know that you are up there in a much better place watching over us is nice to know. Love and miss you!!

Knuckles, its over 5 years now and it feels like yesterday. I think it always will. I am so proud to know you were my friend and that I know you were doing what you love to do helping others, defending what's right. I think of you so often and you come to me in my dreams and it helps me get through a bad day when I think of how you made us laugh. I am just now able to listen to a Rolling Stones and/or Zeppelin song in its entirety, its hard but it helps at the same time. God Bless you and your family. Your friend, Kristen

This week it will be 5 years since your passing and I think of you often. I remember the first day I met you when you were 14 and Jimmy and I took you to the air show. I remember when you got out of "The Corps" and stopped and visited the Fire station. But mostly, I remember a really nice young guy who should have been so much more. My prayers are with you....

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.
These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

Trooper Nicholson,
Today I drove past the sign on the highway that was named in memory of you. I remembered the day that you were killed. I couldn't believe that a thug on a moped (or whatever size cycle he was driving) could have killed a trooper and that it happened so close to the area that I covered as a telecommunicator with the NC Highway Patrol. I said a prayer for your family again today. I know the pain that they continue to feel because I have the pain of losing my first husband - also a Trooper. May God continue to bless your family and watch over them & your co-workers.
