Kenny, you have been honored several ways over the last couple of weeks. The Gloucester County Law Enforcement Museum has you on a memorial wall, Police Unity Tour stopped by your memorial and your baby honored you at her wedding ceremony. Yes, your baby girl just got married. She looked gorgeous and happy. We missed you at every event but know you are always watching over us and protecting us. Love you and miss you.

Today I thought of you sir,
I never met you, but I was raised in Gloucester County. A couple years ago I pursued a career in Law Enforcement. I never knew how difficult it was to get in the door. As I graduated the GCPA, I was handed a check for $500 dollars, The Ken Dechen Scholarship Fund for Alternate Route candidates. I was floored. After months of not getting a paycheck, I cannot thank you for your service, and your family for their unexpected generosity. You are not forgotten, Lt.

You don't know me, but I grew up in Thorofare and my brother was in Ken's class at St. James. I knew your dad since I was a boy and he was one of the great guys in the world. He was great friends with our Dad who was a legendary man named Scotty. When our Dad died in 1986, there came a knock at the door at it was your Dad. He had heard the news and came by to share his sorrow with us. Just the kind of guy he was. I remember him being a heck of a nose tackle on the St. James Football team. He also had a really cool old Ford Falcon when he was a senior and would occasionally get a ride hom from St. James with him and we thought we were the coolest guys. I live in Atlanta now and I don't know why I thought of him today and I found this web site. I hope that Matt and the family sees this and know that people in far off places still think of him. He was an irrepressible soul!! Your mom would know my brother so say that I am Charlie Hughes' younger brother Ian.

God dad- so much time has passed since the accident. We are coming up on 8 long years. So much has happened. Changed. We are all grown up. So different today than we were then. I hope that you are still looking over us all. Not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought of you and your jokes, laugh. I have tried really hard to watch over the girls and mom- we are all doing great. 8 years later and I still can’t believe you aren’t here. Just know that the girls and I talk about you as if you never left- we still have the place down the shore and we all make sure we spend as much time down there as possible- just like you always wanted.
Miss you so much old man!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Kenny,
Even after 6 yrs its so hard to look at your picture and not miss you. You were and still are an inspiration to our department and to our lives. I don't think a shift has gone by when someone doesn't mention the special times with you. So many stories it is what keeps us going you know. All the crazy things and the great times. You would be so proud of your children. Carol has done an awesome job and she is so strong. Well until we meet again my friend and brother in blue.

Lieutenant Dechen,
I had the opportunity to meet your wife during National Police Week 2006 in Washington DC. You would be proud of the things she does for the community in your honor. She spoke so highly of you and your children. You served your department and the citizens of your community well for 23 years and I thank you for that. God bless you.

well dad...I did it...graduated from college...got myself a job, you would complain about it being to easy...but that’s what I went to school for...I miss you like crazy...not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I have tried hard to stick by your values and beliefs, hung close to your thoughts, and lived life like you showed. I hope one day to meet back up with you...you should know that your friends have treated us good and you knew that they would...
Jill is headed off to La Salle, I will watch her like a hawk...and bec is growing up fast...you would be so proud of them.
I love you more than anything in the world. And thanks for making me into the man I am today...
