"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 7th anniversary of your EOW. Such a travesty of justice in your case. Continue to look down on your loved ones, stand at their side and protect them from harm. You are a true hero. Thank you for your service to law enforcement. You have not been forgotten.

Emma,

It truly saddens me to hear of such tragedy by a subordinate. What enrages me more is that the jury aquitted him. I hope that your family finds peace in this and carries on.

Emma, I was just talking to someone about the academy days. I was thinking of you, and wanted to say I love you sister. I will continiue to pray for your family. I pray that your children are comforted by knowing your love for them. I read their reflections, and it hurts to see their hurt. To your family, although you may not know me, I want you to know I love you all as many others do. We have great respect for Assistant Chief Emma Mae Horton.

Its so hard facing reality it seemed like it was just a nightmare.. I remember when it first happened I used to try going to sleep and I just knew when I woke up you'd be here but it never worked so I had to live with the pain but try my best to be strong for Erin and Kristi! I'd do anything for you to be able to watch Erin graduate next year.. I wish you couldve been here to see me graduate or go to prom.. My first prom I saw you in myself I looked like your twin with my makeup on.. It has been seven years and they have been long and the pain hasn't went away yet..I love you and I miss you so much..

Hey Momma,
It has been a long 7 years since your passing, but it really seems like yesterday. The hurt still lingers on and we really miss you so much. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and wonder 'what if' & 'why'. Why couldn't you be there to see me graduate? What if you were here to see your only grandson born? Why you're not here to see Erin go to her 1st prom? It seems that everyday should get easier, but it doesn't. The hurt and pain is so fresh in our hearts and minds. Momma, we love you and miss you so much. I know that you would be so proud of your girls. You are gone, but definitely not forgotten.

Love,
Kristi

TODAY WE REMEMBER ASSIST. CHIEF HORTON.
I AM SO SORRY FOR THE TRAGIC EVENTS THAT TOOK HER LIFE.
SHE WAS TRULY AN EXEMPTARILY OFFICER NOT TO DRAW HER GUN IN SELF DEFENSE. WE DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW AND WHY OUR LOVED ONES HAVE TO BE THE ONES TO DIE, BUT KNOW THAT SHE WILL BE EVER REMEMBERED FOR HER COURAGEOUS ACT.
MAY GOD CONTINUE TO GIVE YOU COMFORT AND STRENGTH.

In loving memory on the 6th anniversary of your death:

The Absent One

As we gather at the table
And watch each smiling face
The heart fills with emotion
To see this vacant place.
We may strive to hide our longings
In the midst of mirth and fun
But we're thinking, thinking, thinking
Of the loved-the absent one.

When we gather 'round the fireside
With merry laughter and jest
How we wish the absent dear one
Was here with all the rest.
Still we join in all the frolic
But we wish the day was done
For we're thinking, thinking, thinking
of the loved-the absent one.

Yet when the day is over
And they all have gone to rest
We feel the Heavenly Father
Does all things for the best.
So we cheer our drooping spirits
With the rising of the sun
But we can't help thinking, thinking, thinking
Of the loved-the absent one. author unknown

Time has not diminished your sacrifice, Emma Mae.

As we approach the 6th anniversay of this beloved officer's murder, I wish to send love and ecouragement to her family and friends.I am sickened and disgusted to read about the events which took our sister, Chief Horton's life. The individual who may think he got away w/ this murder is sadly mistaken. The God of all judgment will render true "justice" in due time. Be encouraged--"God is not mocked. Whatever a man soweth, so shall he reap."--Joanie

First...We must acknowledge this before anything...this sister is with The LORD.....and for that fact, let our pain immediately be at ease. She is in a much better place than Mississippi. Why?........When?....These are my questions.........Why have we as individuals not yet learned to disagree without resorting to violence? Have we not loss to many great people already? When? When will these heartless people learn to choke on there differences and accept the fact that we r all different with different opinions? I nor any of us where there on that horrible occassion, but what we do know is that our sister didnt deserve to be taken from us. That I do know. She sure didnt deserve to go like that in that way.

To this sisters family,,,my heart has a permanent place for Emma, and that I say as real as it can be said. To all my other brothers and sisters in blue........KEEP YA HEAD UP AND STAY ON POINT...BECAUSE THERE A LOT MORE OF GUYS OUT THERE THAT DID WHAT HE DID TO OUR SISTER IN BLUE. I PRAY FOR ALL OF US AS OFTEN AS I CAN...STAY BLESSED.

To the Family, Fellow Officers, Friends of Asst Chief Emma Mae Horton....May God Grant you the Serenity to Accept the things you cannot Change, Courage to change the things you Can, and the Wisdom to Know the Difference....Where this door was closed, May there be a window that opens with Gods grace, and bring Peace to all...in this horrible tragedy...and May her death, be not in vain, but result in understanding that we all walk the same walk when we wear the blue, and justice will prevail.....but we may not see it in our time...

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Tonight, September 8, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Assistant Chief Emma Mae Horton who died on this date three years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

A/Chief Horton's sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Emma, there isn't a day that goes by and I don't think about you. You are truly missed and living here left with the agonizing pain has truly been a nightmare.

The prayers and thoughts have been a tremendous help but surviving a tragic of this magnitude has not been easy.

Please continue your prayers for my family, love ones and Emma's friends.

EMMA, YOU ARE TRULY MISSED BUT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!

Love Always

I would like to say that you are truly missed. There isn't a day that goes by and you are not remembered. Your smile, your laugh and your generosity to help and encourage others. The pain does not get easy but by prayer and the grace of God, I find peace.

Please continue to pray for us and especially her (2) daughters that's left without a mother.

I am sorry, I just now read this story. I can't believe that another officer broke another link in our already thin blue line. We need each other now more than ever before.

From my immediate family and from my police family to the family, friends and co-workers of Asst Chief Horton, please accept our deepest sympothy and prayers. God Speed, God Bless and watch over the rest of us.

My thoughts and hopes are with you and your family, Emma. I am so sincerely sorry that the surviving memebers of your family must suffer through such mysetriously unfair pain. I only hope the officer who committed the crime gets what's coming to him....
