Reflections for Police Officer Kevon Malik Gavin
To Officer Kevon Gavin and his loved ones:
On this the sixth year after your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart is with your family. You’re all in our thoughts and our prayers.
Kevon, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Officer Kevon Gavin. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.
As an attorney for over twenty three years, I am sickened by the appalling lack of justice in your case. I do not understand how an acquital occurred under the circumstances of your death.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Kevon gave to his community and the citizens of Maryland, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 21, 2000.

Kevon you was my favorite uncle, you took my brother and I everywhere and always wanted to do something with us when we were kids. I remember all the fun times we had. Kevon is getting big and he resemebles you more and more each day, he has that brown hair and squeaky voice.

My Brothers and Sisters, we have all sworn to perform our duties, impartially and without hesitation or fear. Our present duty, and though it be painful, is to pay a just and deserving tribute of honor to a Brother or Sister who has embarked upon that lone journey which leads through the valley of the great shadow into the sunlight of perpetual day and lasting tranquility.
These feeble but heart-felt words can do little more than remind us of the duty which we owe to our departed friend and colleague.
As he was ever faithful to us in the full performance of his task and the protection of those who slept, so let us be, my Brothers, faithful to him, ever zealous to protect and cherish the memory of his good deeds, forgetting his imperfections, and emblazoning his accomplishments.
As time runs on, in sun and shade, may we bear with us ever-pleasant memories of a hallowed friendship, a kindly feeling, and a deep respect for all our Brother stood for. As an indication of our regard and affection, let us pause and, in silent meditation, typify what mere words cannot express.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, be with us on this occasion. Strengthen us in a firm resolve to do right, to serve well, to be faithful to our tasks, to our community, and to our Brothers. Make us appreciative of the opportunities to do good and to lend a helping hand. Inspire us with a new devotion to fulfill the duties, which are entrusted to our keeping. May those who mourn be comforted in this sad hour, and may they be strengthened by the knowledge of Thy presence and Thy omnipotence.
May we be constantly reminded in the hours of the night, as well as in the brightness of the day, of Thy everlasting love and kindness, and may Thou guide us through this uncharted valley and bring us at last to the shore of the eternal stream, our ranks unbroken, to dwell with Thee forever more. We ask this humbly through Thy redeeming grace and power. Amen.

We ask Thy blessings and eternal rest to all our brothers and sisters
Who have sacrificed their very lives in the performance of
their duties. Give their loved ones the peace and
Strength to bear the anguish of their loss. Remove all
resentment from their hearts, knowing that eternal
peace and rest will abide their departed loved ones
forever. This we beg, Thy name forever and ever,
Amen.

I know what City Officers face daily. They are taken for granted, undervalued, abused, and in too many cases, treated unjustly. Your passing was not in vain, you upheld honor Kevon. God Bless your family and fellow officers. May they know that their sacrifice is not taken for granted by all, and your memory lives in the minds of the blue brotherhood far and wide. Never forgotten...

Hey Kev,
I never knew that they had a website like this until my father brought it to my attention, so I'm going to take this time out to leave you a note.
I just want to start out by saying thank you for all the comments, Kev was a good person and we love and miss him. I take with me the memories that we have and know that you are in a better place watching over those who love you. I am honored that I am apart of you and had the chance to experience life with you. You have made a difference in the world and I hope that one day I too can be memorable just as you are. I miss you and love you and may God bless you and your young one, through your legacy we all will remember you as a hero.
Love,
Ayana

Hey Kev, This is your uncle I kind of felt I was somewhat responsible for your death being you were following in my footsteps when you became a Police Officer. I remember telling how it is a good job. I never imagined we could have lost our lives as a result of it. However God knows best. You were truly one of good ones.
I miss you...Rest in Peace

Well Kevon, its almost been 5 years since you were taken away from us. It doesn't seem to get any easier to take the loss of such a good friend. I'm glad too have met you and worked with you for those three short years. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and the fun we had in that great squad in the Southwestern Sector 2. I miss you so much brother, but i know your in a good place watching over us. I wait for the day I can see you again.

KG, I remember our times in the academy in Prince Georges County. You were the quiet one. But you were sure squared away. At times we tend to speak highly of others only when they pass on. You were a gem of a person when you were here with us. And if you were still here with us I'd say the same thing. You would give the shirt off your back if someone needed it. I can't forget the days you would call me and tell me of your plans to go back to Baltimore. That's what you really wanted. You went with your heart. It wasn't a mistake that you went back. God had plans for you just like he has plans for each and every one of us who wear the uniform. I'm kind of envious because you're in a better place than I am now. I will definitely see you again in heaven where we can hang out and talk like old times. You where a reflection of your family. God Bless the Gavin Family.

Kevon, I'm sorry for not writing sooner but it's been real hard to express the words on how much we miss you, so. I know there is not a day goes by that someone in the old squad doesn't think of you or make a comment about you to someone. To a friend and a partner you will never be forgotten by your squad in the SWD. May God bless and look over your family. To the time we may see you again, goodbye "Baby-G".

kevon, i don't think the residents of maryland truly know what a brave act you performed that horrible day when you put your life on the line and blocked all of those innocent lives from crossing into the path of that 17 year old mad man but your fellow brothers and sisters will never forget and for that you are a hero.

I didnt know Officer Gavin however I was part of the detail the shut down Wilkens Ave. the day of his funeral. It was a sight to see all the Police cars who came to show support, the mist and overcast not only fit the mood but put an overwhelming glow over the entire procession. I know Officer Gavin could see the amazing turn out and was proud. My wife and I send out our thoughts and prayers to Officer Gavins family friends and co-workers.

Every day, someone in this country has their life changed by a senseless act committed by a criminal. My heart goes out to Ofc Gavin's family, for their loss. I pray for you and your child, that you may find the strength in God to continue on despite your loss. Be happy as much as possible, because if your husband was like me, he would not want it any other way. Cherish your memories instead of mourning the loss, and may God bless you every day.
