Godspeed to you my friend. You will always be missed. Almost 20 years since we got out of high school, seems like forever, although its just as close as yesterday.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Officer Brett Buckmister, his wife and children, parents and his other loved ones:
On this the sixth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
Reading your loving reflections about your beloved Brett gives us some understanding of what a kind and devout man he was.
Brett, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Officer Buckmister. I am humbled by your valor, courage, dedication, and most of all your faith.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Brett gave to his community and the citizens of Arizona, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 21, 2000.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.
Today, March 21, 2006 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Brett C. Buckmister who died in the line of duty on this date six years ago.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
Officer Buckmister’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Dear Brett,
I met your mom last week. What an incredible woman she is! We spent many long hours talking about you and my dad, whom I know you have met by now. You both were such special men, and Heaven is a better place because you are there- and we will rejoice when we all join you there. Your boys are so cute and look like a beautiful combination of you and Nona. I just wish I had met you, although after spending several days with your mom, I feel as though I did know you!
Keep watching over us, and know that love never dies!
God bless and rest in peace,
Lori

I don't think there is a day that goes by that I don't think about you. I have my COPS ribbon in my car and see it everyday and think about you. Jordan was just saying last night how he wished so much that he could of known you better. Because of you and the kind of person you were Jordan still says he wants to be a cop. When he was smaller he always said Police Cop. I thought that was cute. I still go over the last conversation we had about meeting in Lake Powell and going boating with you, Nona and the boys. I regret that we didn't drive up that year to see you on our way home.
Your mom called me one day about two months after the accident and read a letter to you from me. I was so touched that you had kept that letter! You meant and still mean alot to me.
Love you Brett!!

Brett, I have never written my feelings down here or anywhere but my journal. It is hard to write my thoughts at this time, on the eve of the 5th anniversary of your passing. We were all here tonight celebrating Amber and Nona's birthday. All of us including Patty Terry and Jordan. With all eleven grandkids, we make quite a crew. All day as we were cooking dinner I was looking at your picture that sits right on the counter, thinking about you and what you might have been doing 5 years ago tonight. I know you were enjoying a peaceful night with your sons and wife up in Page. I love our family so much. I am grateful that we are each other's best friends. We ejoy just being here, with all of the noise can commotion, our family is the best. I know at times like tonight you are here with us. I don't think there is anything that I can tell you that you don't already know about us. I know that you watch out for us, and that you are always near. For me, your passing has made me long more for spiritual things. I want to be closer to the Lord, and his will for us. I know that He has shown us the way to have eternal life, and that your mission there is to prepare others to recieve these great blessings. I am so proud of you Brett. You lived an exemplary life in the short 27 years you were here. I am honored to have been chosen to be your Mother. You taught me more by your example than I ever taught you. When I read John McKenzie's reflection, my heart lept for joy! I remember you talking about him, and how much you admired him. I know that his experience with you was one that could have been said by everyone who ever knew you. You led by example, and showed us all how to live close to the Lord. You are remembered here because you were an officer who gave his life in the line of duty. But that was only one part of what made you great, what made you special. It was your deep love of the Lord, his church, his word and how you applied that in your life is what made you so outstanding. What makes you so outstanding. I love you Brett, and I miss you every single day. I will try all I can to do be what you are so I can be where you are when it is my time to go. I love you my sweet son.

Once again, the residents of Arizona lose another great officer who put his life on the line, serving and protecting us.
Just like in Matthew 3:17, "And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." There is no doubt that Heavenly Father is well pleased with Officer Buckmister's willingness to serve his brothers and sisters. We are also well pleased. From the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you.
You, Officer Atkinson, and Officer Martin have taught the LDS Church about the true meaning of service. With the pain we are going through right now, one can only imagine what Heavenly Father went through when He saw His only begotten suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane, and then watch Him be crucified.
Mosiah 2:17 says, "And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."
We are forever greatful for your service. Again, the LDS Church, the Department of Public Safety, the residents of Arizona, and most importantly Officer Buckmister's family lost a wonderful man. You and your family will forever be in our thoughts and our prayers. God Bless, and I can't wait to meet you in the next life!

My sincerest condolences go out to Brett's family, especially his wife and children. If only we understood why?
I didn't know Brett as an officer, but I did know Brett as a friend when he was a missionary in the Philippines. As we were leaving the Philippines and headed home to America, he wrote the following to me, "I hope that we'll remember and retain the things that we learned here and use it to return to our Father in Heaven. Do what you know is right and don't ever stop trying because we only fail when we stop trying." May we follow Brett's advice and never stop trying!!!!!
