Reflections for Police Officer George Stefan DeSalvia

Without precedent or reason, I randomly felt a calling to search your name and it brought me here. I recall being a Trooper in Orlando that early morning and helping with the search for your killer who was found in the closet of a nearby abandoned house. We worked during an unusually violent period for central Florida. I am proof that your name and legacy will never be forgotten. Thank you for all that you have done. Rest in peace brother.

My family and I visited the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in DC this past weekend. We etched your name, Tanja’s, Debra’s and several other Officers/Deputies from both Orlando and northeast Florida, where we reside now. It was a very moving moment for all of us.

I will display all the names we etched in my office as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifices you all made. You will never be forgotten.

24 years it is impossible to believe! I went to JYP a few minutes ago to leave flowers and OPD officers were responding 10-18 to something and I had that same sick feeling I had 24 years ago. We love and miss you everyday. I tell my students about you all the time!! You are not forgotten!!!

Rest Easy see you on the other side!!

Think about you every day. Today especially as it's your daughters baby shower. She plans on honoring your name with her baby as we all do every day. No worries as well. I'll make sure they are taken care of and will watch over them here. You got the rest. Love you brother!

Tomorrow marks 23 years since you were senselessly taken from us. I was off that night, but I saw you at the station just three hours before you were murdered. I cannot escape the guilt of not being there for you, brother. I am a teacher now, first year, and I teach 200 high school kids in a criminal justice class. I told all of them about you today, and what a great man, father, husband, son, friend and cop you were. I told them of your service to our nation and community, and your sacrifice. I talked with them about living a life worth living, and the love we have for each other on the thin blue line upon which we stood. I asked my students to make your sacrifice worth it. They were moved by the lesson, may they never forget.

They say we all die, someday. They also say that if no one says our name after we die, that we die twice. We will never let that happen, Sal. RIP brother. We love you, man.

May God bless Officer DeSalvia and his family. I am a defense attorney. I have a deep respect for law enforcement and the demands of the job. I know. I have dealt with criminal defendants for over 30 years. All the respect for Officer Desalvia and all the men and women in law enforcement who protect us.

Ofc DeSalvia was killed during my first week of the police academy in Orlando. After more than 20 years I still remember that night. After 19 years in law enforcement it's hard to think about how young he was in that career. It brought a lot of realization to those of us starting in law enforcement that night about what we were getting into career wise. Here's to hoping he is never forgotten.

George, you were such a young officer with so much yet to do. Who knows the impact you may have made on your fellow officers and your City you swore to protect and serve. I'm willing to bet it would have been awesome. We miss you and you will forever be in our hearts. May God bless your family always.

I will always love you George, we had a great relationship and you were a mentor to me...we were in Marine Corp ROTC together, worked at Athletes foot, went to Venice High school and played basketball at the park in North Port all being a memory that I would never forget..Its so funny how life works, I ended up being a part of your extended family..Your inspiration has influenced my life after all this time and I will continue to live through your light and positive influence and I pray for the well being of all those who love and support this man whom was loved by so many.

18 years since that day. I thank you every time I look down at my wrist and see that subtle reminder of you looking out for all of us here at OPD. Your family is doing awesome, much because of your spirit. Unfortunately, we must engrave the name of another from our hiring class on the wall this year. Show her the beauty of heaven until we all can meet again. Thank you for keeping us safe and Happy Belated Birthday, my man!
