I am thinking about George today, some 26 years after we graduated from the Connecticut MPTC Academy together. I was a Meriden officer then, and George was a great guy to have in class! Always a part of our fond memories.

I know they have had you in their thoughts every day over the past 7 years and silent tears of love continue to fall from their broken hearts. Continue to watch over them and guide them on lifes path. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You will never be forgotten.

The Final Inspection
Sergeant George Ross Dingwall stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Sergeant Dingwall .
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
Sergeant Dingwall squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As Sergeant Dingwall waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Sergeant Dingwall,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Six months have passed since out department lost one of our own.  One would never think that a department of our size would lose an officer in the line of duty.  Sgt. Dingwall was the first in the Cities history and hopefully the last.  Sgt. Dingwall was a classmate and close friend of mine. As our families grew they became close friends as well. Sgt. Dingwall was a loving family man and well respected in our department.   He continues to be dearly missed. George please conrtinue to watch over us and remember your closing at Roll Call will alwayed be remembered.  Continue to Dance Like No Ones Watching. You are greatly missed by those who loved and respected you.

Dance like no one's watching

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another.

Then we are frustrated that the kids aren't old enough and we'll be more content when they are older.

After that we're frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with.  We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice trip when we retire.

The truth is, there's no better time to be happy than right now.  If not now, when?

Your life will always be filled with challenges.  It's best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D. Souza.  He said "For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life.  But there was always some obstacle in the way.  Something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.  Then life would begin.

At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness.  Happiness is the way.  So treasure every moment that you have.  And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special,  special enough to spend your time.....and remember that time waits for no one.

So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school,

Until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds,

Until you have kids, until your kids leave the house,

Until you start work, until you retire,

Until you get married, until you get divorced,

Until Friday night, until Sunday morninhg,

Until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off,

Until Spring, until Summer, until Fall, until Winter,

Until you are off Welfare, until the first or fifteenth,

Until your song comes on,

Until you've had a drink, until you've sobered up,

Until you die, until you are born again,

To decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy... Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

A thought for today:

"Work like you don't need money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like no one is watching."
