"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It has taken me a long time to visit this page and write something about my friend Mark. I had the greatest pleasure working with him. Although I wasn't dispatching at the time of this tragedy I was in another department of the Sheriff's office. He would always use my computer, lock it up and leave me a note taped to the screen that he broke my computer. I remember he would play Guns N Roses Sweet Child of Mine of his PA system in his vehicle. Too funny. On the night of this tragedy, he was using my computer and of course he couldn't get it too work (i put a password on it so he wouldn't break it, lol)and I received a page from him. I was playing softball at the time and didn't look at my pager until about an hour later. By then all this happened. Too this day I wondered what kind of scoulding he was going to give me for password protecting my computer from him. I never got to tell him the password was his unit number 633. I new in a million years he would never guess that. I miss all of the fallen officers everyday. I know that he is in heaven keeping track of all of us and protecting us from up above.

I'm writing this little note just to let everyone know how my life was touched in so many ways by mark,I worked, argued
laughed, cried with him for so many years and he still continues to touch my life in so many ways, I have to thank him. He was always telling me where my son was, who he was with, and how he might get into trouble and having little talks with Jason, and staying on his butt whenever and where ever he saw him, amazingly that was at least 10 to 12 years ago. I want him to know it has paid off and thanks to him and other great officers like him who took my son under thier protective wings,I'm so proud of that boy a couple of weeks ago he made fireman of the year at our local Pleasanton F.D. he has a great job and he is a very responsible adult. I and he (Jason)were very blessed to have had Mark in our lives. I still think about him and Tom and Terry every day and they will forever be in my heart.
Love,

Mark,
You are greatly missed. I won't forget you or your family. They are still all in my prayers. We worked together for several years, before I came to San Antonio to dispatcher to a much larger group of officers, where I lost another good friend in October 2005. You were a very good officer and I use your love of the job alot when teaching new cadets. Thanks for making my job a little easier on the other side of the radio.

Dearest Mark,

After all these years, it seems that the pain should be easier, but it is not.

We miss and love you more than you will ever be able to understand, and wish so much that things were different.

As I face Thanksgiving and know that you are not here to enjoy with your wonderful wife and children, please know that not a day goes by that you are not thought of, prayed for, loved or missed.

I love you little brother...you have touched so many lives, and continue to do so even from above.

Love, Debe

Mark,
I still think about you all of the time. The fun times we had in those years. I still remember the times we would sneak off 10-6, to my Mom and Dads and you would eat all of the chicken fried steak.
