Reflections for Lieutenant Tonya Doreen Gillikin
Its been 14 years today and not one day goes by when I don't think of you. As the exact time rolls around and I hear your partner that night yell officer down and knowing that you were working my heart stops. You have left us here on earth but I know you are walking that beat in heaven! RIP my dear Tonya until we meet again!

GOD BLESS YOU, ALTHOUGH I AM BITTER AND BLAME THE COURT SYSTEMS FOR THINGS LIKE THIS. LIFE IS 16 YEARS, DONT WE ONLY WISH. I HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH MY FATHERS EXECUTION EVERYDAY FOR 18 AND IT HAS ONLY STARTED. WHEN IS THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM GOING TO STEP UP AND TRAKE CARE OF BUSINESS? UNTIL THEY DO WE WILL DEAL WITH TRAGEDIES LIKE THIS EVERY DAY. DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOU GET MORE TIME FOR NONFLAFGGRANT CHILD SUPPORT OR 4 DUIS THAN YOU DO FOR TAKING THE LIFE OF A POLICE OFFICER? LETS DEMAND JUSTICE, AMERICA, AND LOVED ONES

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Family and Friends of LT. Gillikin,
I had the honor of being in Morehead City on Oct.27,2007 when a memorial was unveiled in honor of those who had sacrificed their lives in the line of duty for us. Lt. Gilliken, I did not know that you were the first woman officer to lay down her life for me in N.C. I salute you and thank you for your service to the Enfield Police Dept. and the state of North Carolina. May God bless your family and friends and may they know that you will never be forgotten, as our HERO's never die, but remain alive in our hearts and memories. Thank you for your unselfish Courage.
Remembering you,

As I often scroll through this memorial site today I felt compelled to leave a reflection. I personally did not know you Lt. Gillikin, but I attended your "Home Going" service in Morehead City. I cried the whole time uncontrollably. Chief Gregory and members of your department represented you well but the real crown is yours. It's from God, you sure as heck earned it! I know you are in heaven looking down and wouldn't trade it for nothing. Tonya, I know its better on the other side with the Lord. Rest in peace. You will always be remembered first as a human being, female, policewoman, Lieutenant, whatever. To me you will go down in North Carolina History as a HERO!

To Lt. Tonya Doreen Gillikin, and her loved ones:
On this the seventh anniversary week of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
My son who was fatally shot on April 23, 2005 was born in Durham. We still have lots of family in North Carolina and I was saddened to learn about Lt. Gillikin's death and that she was the first female law enforcement officer to die in North Carolina.
Lt. Gillikin, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Lt. Tonya Gillikin. I am humbled by your valor and dedication.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Lt. Gillikin gave to her community and the citizens of North Carolina, and for the supreme sacrifice she and her family made on March 15, 1999.
