Reflections for Lieutenant Tonya Doreen Gillikin
I was in Rookie school with you many years ago. I saw you before you left Carteret County to start your new job. The last words you said to me was "You're going to read about me in the papers". One morning I got in the car to go to work and the first words I heard were about your death on the radio. I sat in the car and cried.
I miss you

The night Tonya was killed is a night I will never forget. She and I backed each other up many times, though we did not work for the same agencies. Tonya was an awesome cop. Rest In Eternal Peace, babe. You are not forgotten. -707

Tonya above all was one of the finest officer's and people I ever had the privilege of serving with. Tonya was the type of officer who would kick butt with you or cover back as needed, she and I had some great times in trenches and jungles of Enfield NC. I think of you often my good friend and miss you!! You where honestly one in a million. I look forward to the day when I see you again. It is hard to believe you have been gone 17 years. Rest in Peace!!! you did your duty!!!

I did not know you, but I am certain I would have loved working with you. I was a rookie officer in 1994 when hired by the Enfield police department. I only stayed two years and left to go to Duke Public Safety in Durham NC.

Today, I pause to give gratitude for the life of Lt. Tonya Gillken. Seventeen years ago today we were bonded by tragedy. From this experience I vowed to ensure all telecommunicators hired within our department were given proper training, resources, and understanding of officer safety and the primary role they have in this profession. To this day I have kept my promise to her and myself as I continue in this effort. As we move throughout this day, please keep in mind the risks that all law enforcement officers take everyday to keep us safe, and continue to pray for their safety as they continue to protect and serve. #AllLivesMatter #iDispatch #SupportingMenAndWomenInLawEnforcement #OfficerSafety #911Matters

Wow, I can not believe it has been 14 years since you got taken away from Enfield. Well I knew you well, you pulled me over one night and you let me go home, I know what you did was up to your judgement because I could have went to jail but you let me go home with my 3 children. I want to say that you were a great person not because of what you did for me but because you did stand for what was right and what was wrong, I never knew of any one who said anything bad about you, may you rest in peace Tonya, you were a great person.
