It was extremely painful to hear of Michaels death while on duty. I never had the pleasure of meeting Michael but we are all family in blue. Myself and my partner Bobby Carnathan escorted Michael to his final resting place on our TPD motors. It was a cold snowy day, sleeting on and off and the roads were really slick. Normally on this situation we would have used our patrol cars for escort, but Michael was a good man and that paid the ultimate price for our community. It was an honor to be there for Michael and his family. Seven weeks later I was hit by a car while on motorcycle duty. I spent a long time in the hospital and two consecutive Christmas holidays in a hospital bed in my home. I went through seventeen surgeries in the first 21 days. While in the hospital, Michaels parents Jerry and JoCarol came to visit me in my room at NMMC. We had a great visit and spent time remembering Michael and the day we escorted him. Before Michaels parents left that day they gave me two things that belonged to Michael. One was a silver cross he kept with him all the time and the other was the Lord’s Prayer on a business type card. For the past twenty years I’ve religiously kept those two items in my wallet. Every day I look at them and remember Michaels sacrifice and his families love. Thank you for you ultimate sacrifice Michael, you will NEVER be forgotten. Thank you to Jerry and JoCarol for the thoughtful gift. I’ll keep them with me till the end.
“Blessed are the peacemakers”.

March 11th 1999 I turned 12 years old. My uncle was the Sheriff at the time Deputy Hisaw was killed. I remember hearing all about it and little did I know 7 years later I would be getting involved in Law Enforcement. I actually think about Deputy Hisaw often. I hear his name mentioned around the office regular. Never have I ever heard a cross or negative word about Deputy Hisaw. I think it would have been pretty awesome to have met him just by the stories I have heard. God rest your soul brother and help guide and protect us through our daily duties and thank you for serving our community.

Deputy Hisaw and I went to the police academy together. I don't remember many folks from the academy days, but Hisaw readily comes to mind. I specifically recall sitting on the Quarter Deck and talking shop. Even then (as a rookie) he us taught lessons that would last for years.
As time has passed, I have become a supervisor, training officer, ect. Lessons learned from Hisaw at the academy and from when he was killed is taught to every rookie. I dont always mention Hisaws name, but his memory lives in every rookie I train.

I never met Officer Hisaw personally but I have never heard of a kinder man to all he met. I would like to commend Officer Hisaw on bringing a shining example for all of us whether we carry a badge on us or not. I also would like to extend my condolences to his friends and family for their grievous and unfortunate loss of a fine young man. He's not in our world any longer but his impact on it continues on in all of our hearts.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Deputy Micael Hisaw and his loved ones:
On this the seventh anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
In reading the reflections about Michael, it is obvious he was well-loved and well-respected. I am so sorry that he was robbed of a lifetime by being killed at such a young age.
Michael, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Deputy Michael Hisaw. I am humbled by your courage and valor.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Michael gave to his community and the citizens of Mississippi, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 11,1999.

I can remember that day. A pause I felt in my chest. Michael was and will always be a special person to me. A man among men. Let me share with you a story. Many years ago I worked with Michael. My grandmother was sick and was living briefly in Oxford Alabama. The trip was roughly 5 hours from where we lived. My car was broke down and I wanted to see her before she relocated to The state of Maryland. At first, I did not want to ask Michael to take me to see her, however, he was a warm person and soon after I felt comfortable asking him. All I ask him was if he was not busy could he take me. The very next words out of his mouth was "What time was we leaving" I will never forget the kindness of a true friend. It turn out that was the last time I saw my grandmother alive. Michael you are a true Champion. Thank You

Hisaw was one of a kind. We went through the Law Enforcement Academy together. I remember him laughing alot. His sense of humor was invaluable when the rest of us were stressed out, tired, or just home-sick. I can almost see him laughing at Left...Left or his smile when telling the story about a certain suicide call.
We lost contact after the academy, but his memory has never faded.
At the academy, we gave it our all. Hisaw gave his all after graduation. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Michael, I wasn't there when you needed me the most, seems like I was never there when you really needed a friend. I can't count the number of times you either called or came by my house wanting to talk or just ride to town. I'd always make up some lame excuse about being to busy or being to tired from working, on a few occasions I didn't even answer the door. God, if I'd only known that these were last few days of your Life here on this earth I would have been a better friend. Sometimes we don't know what we have until we've lost it. Michael you were a true friend, you taught me everything I knew just starting in law enforcement, you always took the time to listen to my problems when no one else seemed to care. I know you 'll always be just a prayer away but I still can't help but wish you were still here with us. Thanks, Michael for always being there and being a true friend.
Love, Bryon

When I first started dispatching for the Sheriff Department, Michael was the first person I knew. I was then 20 years old, away from home and didn't know anyone! Michael was the closest one to my age. On my days off I would ride with him and he would teach me the "do's and don'ts" of law enforcement. When I finally turned 21 I became a Reserve for the Sheriff Department. He was the one I was with. What I liked about Michael, was that he done everything by the book. If he didn't know something, he found the answer. I told myself, if I ever make a career out of this I want to be like Hisaw.
I was with him the day before he got killed. I can remember all the calls we went on that day. The best time of the day was when myself, Michael, and Officer Chris Whitley set up a "Road Block" and this elderly woman came through. She didn't even look when she came through. She went right through the road block. There we were, three officers in uniform in the middle of the road, and she went through it. There was no way we could jump in the car and got stop her because of us all laughing. I can remember Michael looking at me and officer Whitley, and saying "I guess she didn't see us!"
I wasn't with him the day he was shot. When the morning dispatcher called me and told me, it was just like a dream. It still is! Not only did the department loose a good officer, but I lost my best friend. I have never lost a family member nor a best friend until now. I didn't think I would ever get over it. There has been many times where I wanted to get out of law enforcement but I would ask myself, "Would Michael want me to get out?" Michael always told me to set my mind on something and go for it. That is what I do.
I know Michael is in a much better place than I am, and I know that I'll get to see him one of these days. My parents have asked me if I get scared when I answer disturbance calls and I tell them I do BUT, I know Michael will always be with me in what ever I do. Michael, you were the best one we had, and you are truly missed! You will always hold a special place in our hearts that no one will ever replace.
Love,

I just wanted to say that you are really missed here, and you were cared about a lot. I miss seeing you in my store every week. We had some of the silliest conversations, and you always made me laugh. But I can't remember a time when you couldn't bring a smile to whomever was around. I really enjoyed knowing you and being your friend, I only wish there would have been more time. But God has a plan for everyone, and obviously he chooses only the best for his heavenly fold. My condolences go out to your family and my thoughts and prayers are with them. Hisaw was one of the best and will remain that way in our hearts eternally. I can only thank God that he allowed me to know such a wonderful person.

I can close my eyes, and see a thin, bright eyed, young boy, looking at me and my uniform. He was so fascinated with it that he could hardly speak. When he did, he told me, " I want to be a police officer one day." I passed it off as a young boy's brief fancy. But that day came true for Michael, and I recall that day. Though I had left the Booneville Police Department, I was well aware of Michael being hired, and I thought to myself, "dumb kid!!" But Michael turned out to be one of the most devoted, sincere, and caring officers that I have ever had the privilege to know, and call a friend. I never got the chance to let him know how proud I was, not just of him, but for him.
Michael did what he had dreamed to do, become a police officer.
Michael you did well, and I love you. I just wish that there was a lot more I could have done.
Michael now watches over all of us, and I have no doubt that we are all well cared for.
I read a bible verse a while back, Matthew I think, hope I get this right. "Blessed are the peace keepers, for they shall be called the children of God."
Michael we will miss you, and remember you always.
Love Gabe
