Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Matthew Anthony Dziergowski

I said a little prayer today for Police Officer Dziergowski and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

Hey Matty, I didn't know you but I looked at your plaque in the hallway of the Precinct everyday I called roll call. Just letting you know that you are not forgotten by those still left at your old command. Hope all is well at your new position and we will continue to watch over your family as you watch over us. Rest in Peace.

I knew Matthew's Dad at the Clay County Sheriff's Office in Florida. He was also retired from NYPD. After 9-11, he gathered a collection of donated money and presented it to Mayor Giuliani. In Policework, we always see the scum who do nothing but take from society and don't contribute anything. Here we see two generations of American heroes who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their brothers in blue and make the world a better place.

Rest in peace, sir. Thank you for your service.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Matty was a true hero. He put himself in harms way to protect the lives of his brother officers. To Mattys kids: as you grow up you will see that Spiderman, Batman and Superman are super "Heros" Football, Baseball, and Basketball players are also called "Heros" but none of those so called " Heros" could shine your dads shoes. Stand tall, walk proud, Hold your heads high and remember your Matty Dziergowski's kids! May he rest in peace.

A man of such selfless courage.

January 8, 2006

Rest in Peace, Brother. Your service and your selfless sacrifice will never be forgotten. There is nothing that can possibly be said that would describe the true admiration we feel towards you.
May you now reap the rewards of being such a good person. There is a special place in Paradise for heroes of your caliber and the Almighty called you Home to rest.
Continue to watch over your family and keep them from harm. Help them to find the strength we know they need to carry on in your absence. Let them find some comfort in knowing that they played a part in making you the hero that you are and that you are a hero to so many.

We pray that when the time comes, we can muster half of the courage you did in saving your comrades.

Until we meet on the other side, Godspeed!

This officers actions are more than above and beyond the call of duty.

He is a true hero!

I work with Matt's brother here in Jacksonville, and he is truly one of the finest officers I have ever worked with.

In grave situations like this as it is true in combat, you lose your best and brightest.

This is truly a story that has touched my heart.

Thank you Matt and I will do my part to watch over your brother here.

If you open a dictionary and look up the word "Hero", your picture should be shown. Words can not express how proud your brother and sister officers are at your sacrifice.

God bless you and your family.

We pause to reflect on this wonderful human being, who gave his life so that others may live. We thank the Lord for people like him;for he not only causes us to reflect on our lives (and thus strive to become better human beings), but also gives us a reason to feel hope about this entire human race.

God bless.

I often check this page to see the fallen, and their stories are always so touching. However, Officer Dziergowski's sacrifice stands out. He knowingly traded his life for those of his 3 partners. He acted knowing full well he would trade his life for his co-workers. It reminds me of the soldiers in battle who jump on grenades for their buddies. It is a shame that the Congressional Medal of Honor is only given to troops during combat, because Officer Dziergowski's actions were above and beyond the call of duty and he would be a fitting addition to the ranks of those honored with the Medal.
Good job Matt, you make us all proud to be police officers.

Words alone will not express the sacrifice that Police Officer Dziergowski has made, for his fellow Officers.

Words alone can not express the loss to his family, fellow Officers and his friends.

The only words I know that can explain his actions are:

"ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY"

Sergeant Thomas M. Reilly
New York State Courts

"Greater love hath no man . . . . " May you rest in peace, Office Dziergowski.
