Reflections for Police Officer Richard Daniel Scalf
My dear son,
Ten years today and we remember with great honor and respect, the life you lived. We will always remember
and as long as we live, you will never be forgotten.
We miss you, love you and are so proud of you. We just wish
you didn't have to leave us.

Wow! This was one of the best examples of true guts and bravery. You were a hell of a warrior who went down blazing. I would have fought beside you anytime. I am so sorry for your family but they should be proud of you Officer Scalf.

I just wanted to say hello, I have visited this site many times. I still remember as kids playing with the ant farms we had. Never thought we would go into this line of work. Please watch out over us all. My thoughts and prayers still go out to your family everyday. Rest in peace.

Rich,
I still remember the day, at KFC, when you told me you had been accepted to the academy. You were so excited; I smile everytime I think of that day. You had the biggest smile on your face. I'll always be proud of you.

I want to thank your mother for stopping at my son Michael's page and leaving a reflection. I know the pain she feels every day. The first thing she thinks of as the new day dawns is of you and the last thought she has before she drifts off to sleep at night is of you. Continue to keep watch over all of your loved ones, protect them and also those still out on patrol guarding over the Thin Blue Line. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You have not been forgotten.

I will always take time to honour you, because you are my hero. You made the ultimate sacrifice a person could make, you gave your life to save another. I love you, I miss you and I know that you have been with me the last 9 years of my career. I say a prayer for your mom and your brothers and it was glad to hear from your mom and know that she is doing ok. I will always remember you my brother in blue.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Termite,
It been a long time since that morning on Chene and Hendrix. I would not have believed that day saw you in court, would have been the last time. To come and see you that afternoon, with the rest of the crew will be embedded in my mind forever.

To Officer Richard Daniel Scalf, and his loved ones:
It has been eight years since your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart goes out to your family. I share the anguish of your mother Donna in that I also lost my beloved youngest son, and I know that the pain of that loss never goes away.
I also know the importance of our cherished officers never being forgotten.
Officer Scalf, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Officer Scalf.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Officer Scalf gave to his community and the citizens of Michigan, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 5, 1999.

It has been eight years and you have not been forgotten nor will that ever be the case. Your loved ones think of you every day and the Blue Family will not let you be forgotten. Keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol. You are a true hero. I know the pain felt by those that love you and how their lives have been changed forever. Stay close to them and wrap your wings around them.

It's getting close to the anniversary of your death and for me the yearly reiminder of how much we lost that day. I will be 29 on the 10th of February, and still it doesn't seem that it was so long ago. Time has healed some wounds but I still can't drive down Chene and Hendrie (just to much to bear). I hope your mom is doing well and your brothers, nieces, nephews are well also. I said I would never forget and I won't......Keep me under your wings Diamond

May Officer Scalf continue to rest in heavenly peace, and may God comfort those he left behind, especially his mom. As we approach the holidays, I strongly urge everyone to remember the officers who stand between us and chaos and let the world know you support law enforcement by putting a blue light in your window thru the holidays. The stores sell a plastic candle for a couple bucks and a blue Christmas light bulb works best.
For all Richard's pals, don't forget to eat a candy cane for Termite, cause that was his favorite 'treat' at Christmas time. I take candy canes with blue ribbons tied on them to my church to give to others and now, after 4 years, they have come to look forward to the candy canes. Please help me in this by buying your candy canes and blue ribbons, as well as your blue light to shine for 'peace and safety'. God bless our law enforcement team. Donna Rundell, Termite's mom. Love to all.

Today, as I was just surfing around the web, I found myself reading the "Officer Down Reflections" and had no idea these wonderful words were here. I wish I could hug each and every one of you-you are all so dear to me. It has been a long 4 years now and time has made it a little easier to cope-I cried the first 3 years and now I keep my vulnerable moments of emotion to the privacy of my home; and those times aren't that often. The pain of loss has been overridden by our pride in "Termite" and the other officers who face danger every time they go on duty.
I really would love to talk to LaShanna Petty if the opportunity ever arises. One thing you all can know for sure, our whole family is so proud of our Detroit Officers. May the Lord richly bless you and keep you in His Care.
