Reflections for Police Officer John C. Knight
Following militry retirement I was employed by Savin Corp in Elk Grove Village. John Knight worked for me. He remains in my prayers. John, while employed with Savin, worked as a Technician servicing Savin products. He was a outstanding employee setting an example of competence, customer care, and integrity to all his associates. John Knight remains in my memory as a heroic police officer who gave his life in the service of his brothers and sisters. Paraphrasing our savior, no greater love hath he who lays down his life for his friend. John's memory lives on.

I find it hard to imagine that it has been 9 years. It feels like yesterday. I have been blessed for the way you touched my life. For that I am truly thankful.

Its been almost 8 years when I was a young rookie and went to D.C. for the survivors march. When I visited the wall I saw a letter your father wrote and I almost remember the exact words he left for you. When I got home that night I told my wife about the letter and she cried. After that everynight I went to work I would here my little ones who were only 2 and 3 at the time pray for me to come home to them in the morning. I asked my wife about that and she told me they always did I just never payed attention to those things. After that moment I remembered your fathers words when he said he saw you that morning and it didnt occur to him that you wouldnt come home from your tour. I try never to take anything for granite. I think about that often and I pray for your family often. God bless you and all of your family.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It's hard to beleive it's been 8 years, seems like yesteday I heard the news and attended your funeral. I didn't know you but from what I heard the day of your funeral and reading the reflections you could have been the inspiration for the motto on the Law Enforment Memorial in DC. RIP brother. 1/9/07

John, A poem witten by your 12 year old son Matthew John Knight.
A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER
His name was Officer Knight
He didn't get much chance to put up a fight His killer shot him dead And Knight was eternally put to bed His wife said to be safe that day but he had an ultimate price to pay He loved the city that he served and protected
He never wanted anyone to be neglected
Knight has been put to rest Knowing that his kids will do their best Now
his killer will spend his life in jail
with no chance of parole Now the Knight kids will grow up with out their
Dad Who knows what kind of memories they could have had But Officer Knight's children will move on Even though their Dad is gone.

As i continue with my journey into Law Enforcement, you are an 'unknown' individual that has been my guiding force. The pages i have written, with you as my topic, have impacted many individuals that read along. My life has been changed learning not only who you were, but who you are. The world has suffered a tremendous loss that cannot be described. Thank you for everything you have done....and tell my old man i miss him.

Tonight your killer was found guilty of 1st degree murder...I broke down in tears when I heard. We lost a good friend and a good cop five years ago, and you can never be replaced, but your death was not in vain, you are a true hero. Godspeed, Sparky
