"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Mongo, I had the pleasure of knowing and working with you in 1st Precinct when I was an NAO. Your sense of humor was always something I'll remember. You were one of the last officers I said goodbye to before I returned to Mass to start my fulltime career, and I was shocked and saddened to hear of your passing. God Bless, and Rest in Peace.

Mongo, I remember when you would stop by CVAS's Church Hill station. I moved away about 10 years before you died but I cried like I had seen you yesterday. Now, I can't believe it's been almost 8 years since you left us. I know anyone who ever worked with you, never forgot you.

Mongo,

Sir, This is one of the paramedics that transported you on that fatefull night. I still feel sick to my stomach when I think of the events that night and how they occured. We were sitting at a certain hospital when I heard the traffic over the radio, I felt sick to my stomach and I knew it wasn't good. I feel and pray that your aware on the events that occured with EMS. I also want you to know that, Mongo, I did all that I could en route, I still question alot of things but I know that when I see you, I hope you'll know. I feel cheated that I never got to meet you and I know that someday I will. Not to long ago, one of my fellow medics joined you, it just so happens he was also there that night. I know he's probably talking with you about "Rib Town".

Take care my friend.

Mongo, I never had the opportunity to know you, but I learned so much about how much you were loved and respected by your fellow police. Only days after you were murdered, Richmond Police Captain Donnie Robinson died of a massive heart attack. He was my Richmond, VA Police Academy classmate and close friend. I traveled from Georgia to his funeral. It was there that I learned about you from my many friends still on the department. You are so loved. I feel cheated that I did not know you. You are a true hero who gave all, protecting the citizens of Richmond. You're with Donnie Robinson and all the other Richmond heroes now. . . so many of them . . . but you all are at peace . . . you fought the honorable fight with dignity and valor. Rest easy blue brother. Your fellow Richmond Officers will cover your place on the thin blue line. I know you'll look down and guide and cover them. With brotherly love and respect, Jim Crotty (Former Richmond, VA Police Officer (1972-1975)

I still remember those nights you would visit us at the city jail just to say hello at 2am. You would have us laughing so hard we did not want to go back to work. I was just a rookie then and you made a great impression on me. Six years later I give all I can never knowing that it could be my last . Thank you for teaching me to enjoy ever minute of this job I can.

Mongo,

As my father is as well a police officer in the city of richmond i will always remember the times as i was growing up that he would take me by your house to see your house lighted up in the THOUSANDS of CHRISTMAS lights you would have.  You were truly a nice individual and will be greatly missed by not only my father but the enitre Richmond Police Department by the generosity you displayed and the many hearts you touched.

May you now rest in peace and light up your own house as you would for everyone else that came to see your castle !!

Son of Richmond Police Officer
Richmond, VA

Unfortunately, I was working the night this incident occurred.  We all have it engraved in out heads.  The good thing is, that one night of bad memories can't come close to the good ones you have left behind.

Mongo, we miss you.  You gave your heart and soul to the citizens of this city, and more so to the citizens of Church Hill.  After all of that, you managed to give your life as the ultimate sacrifice to your community.

It is written in the Scriptures that God appoints those he wants in authority.  You are definately an example of that.  The Lord also says, there is no greater sacrifice than to give one's life for others.  You sir, have done what we all do everyday, that is to be so selfless as to put your life on the line for your fellow officers and citizens.  You carried it one step further.  You gave your life to protect others.

God bless you.

Your memory lives on.
