"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

David,
I can't believe it's already been 9 years since that tragic phonecall I received. There is not a day that I don't think about you, I miss you so much. You will always live on in my heart. I always remember how much fun it was talking to you and having Charles interupt us to get on the phone and give me crap. He was a great guy too, and I know you guys are together now still doing what you can to have fun. Someday we'll be together again and we'll pick up right where we left off, you were truly one of my very best friends and I'm so glad I got to have you in my life. I will always love you.

I was the permanent duty First Sergeant assigned to Al Jaber the day Airmen Schroeder and Campbell passed away. It was a very difficult day and even weeks that followed. To lose not just one but two troopers in one day is devestating. They put themselves in harms way and paid the ultimate price so we could be free. That must never be forgotten. God Bless his family and friends.

I was deployed to Al Jaber Air Base when this tragedy happened. It was a very sad day and one that those of us who were there will never forget. Airman Schroeder and Airman Campbell answered the call of duty and selflessly went into in harms way. They left the comforts of home and traveled to a far away land to preserve our precious freedom. It is because of them and others like them that we live in such a great country. I think of them from time to time and always will. God Bless Them.

On this date that dreadful day years ago you made the ultimate sacrifice. I too was a K9 handler with the SP's from 1995-1999 and then continued my career in LE in the civilain sector. God speed my freinds and remember you will never be forgotten.

I was TDY to Al Jaber and working the morning that Dave and Chuck were killed. That was the darkest day of my 7 year career thus far. They were both great kids that everyone liked. You guys are sorely missed by all defenders. We will all join you again someday.
