Reflections for Correctional Officer James Stephen Hopkins, II

Although James is gone from this life, I think of him often in my waking hours, througout days stolen into years, and wish that he were here to speak with, to laugh with, to touch, to hug, to protect, to hold in this present, alive and whole, forever. But he is no longer here, in presence, and I must wonder how he is and where he is in a realm that I can neither see nor yet enter. These are the times that I wish I could commune with the dead, so that James might assure me that he is happy, well, content, and, eternally, free from harm. I miss him and hope that he knows how much he is remembered and profoundly loved.

In memory of my brother, James. I will always embrace the essence of who he is, reflected in those he touched and those who embody even just a trace of who he was.

To the family and loved ones of Correctional Officer James Stephen Hopkins II and his fellow officers with the St. Louis County Department of Justice Services:

On this the eighth anniversary of James' tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. James' professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry that James was robbed of his life so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service James gave to his community and the citizens of Missouri, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 20, 1998.

A Civilian

I had the oportunitity to work with Officer J. Hopkins when he would come to our institution to pick up or bring back offenders going to or from court. I was so saddened by the news of his loss. He was always professional in our dealings and very pleasant to everyone he came in contact with at M.E.C.C. My heart felt grief for his family and friends at his loss.
