Thankyou for your service and sacrifice OFFICER BURTT. You will never be forgotten

POLICE OFFICER
PHILA PA

January 21, 2008

To Oficer William Henry Burtt and his loved ones:

On this the ninth year anniversary week of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

.
Officer Burtt, you rescued us, saved our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Burtt. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Officer Burtt gave to his community and the citizens of Virginia, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 3, 1998.

Burt, after the most recent death of a Norfolk Officer, I keep thinking, "sure wish that Burt was here." You had the ability to bring a side or light to an exposive situation and make those involved know that all will be OK. It all happens for a reason. You too may have been over at the shooting in the area you so often visited the Stop and Shops- but you would have been known because you ALWAYS prowdly displayed your badge in plain view. I know that you will help guide the new officers how to avoid such a sad and difficult tragedy. Look out for the latest NPD who has joined you.

Daddy,
I still find it hard to believe that you have been out of my life for 8 years now. But I know that even though you are out of my life physically, you are still here spiritually. Daddy, I still miss you so much and it often feels like this nightmare just happened yesterday, but I am getting stronger. Your baby is all grown up now. I know that you are looking down on me with a big smile as you watch me become a young woman. I love you and you will never be forgotten.

not diminished your sacrifice. Sounds like you were a great cop and human being. Thanks for your

Seems like only yesterday we were kidding around in Norfolk Circuit Court.
As much as you enjoyed being a Deputy Sheriff we all knew you had your heart set on becoming a Norfolk Police Officer. You enriched the lives of everyone you ever met with your infectious smile and quick wit. May you rest in peace my friend.

Burtt,
What can I say except thank you for allowing me to be in your police academy and for making every single one of us laugh and laugh. You were a character that no one has ever seen before. You sure did dress fancy and I cant think about your purple suit and yellow one. You are and will always be one of kind. You had a heart of gold and I am glad I was able to have known you for as long as I did. I havent forgotten and I will not ever. May GOD Bless you, your family, and children.

Dear Officer Burtt,

I am adding another special angel to my prayer list - you. I bet you never thought of yourself as an angel, but believe me brother, you are. I have read all your reflections and you are quite a guy.

I know that life is eternal and I ask that you pray for me from up above. I have added you to my prayer list. Thank you for your years of dedicated service. May your family find comfort and peace in God's mercy and grace. Rest well, bro. We love you.

I hate the days that pass and mark another year without a fellow brother, a great friend a man who would do anything to make another's life better. When I first met him I was quiet and removed because I never knew which suit he would have on in court. He always had a laugh- not one that we giggled behind other's backs, but the laugh that everyone enjoyed because Burt enjoyed everyone. I was on my way to a Tactical School when Burt was killed and it made the class seem as it woul never end. Burt, you it wasn't the suit that made me admire you. It was the time my partner left in purtsuit at Okeefe and Church St and all of the sudden you showed up in your car and said get in. A couple of minutes later, we were in the pursuit, going the wrong way on a one way street in YOUR PERSONAL TRUCK. I still laugh when you told me to "hang on that door comes open sometimes"
We got the bad guys and you broke an antenae, not bad for chaos. I wonder if DEA Agent Mike Hill remembers this story?
Cannot wait to see you taking care of all those who have sacrificed after you left us, do you make EACH of them wear purple suits?

Officer W. Burtt died protecting the citizens of Norfolk... He was doing the job he loved... He will always be in our hearts and in our prayers and serve as a reminder of just how dangerous the job we do is. He was a good Officer and well liked through out the city... That showed as people lined the streets of the funeral route... and that to me is the greatest tribute of all... Rest in peace my brother...

Officer William Burtt was an exceptional officer. Upon graduating from my academy several years ago I was put to work with him in his platoon and will never forget all the things he taught me and all times he made me laugh. Burtt had a special way with people and if you knew him, you would know why. I am really going to miss him dearly, but I know that he will still watch over the rest of us from the heavens. We miss you brother........

Officer Burtt died doing what he loved best---protecting someone. He was loved and respected, not only by his fellow officers, but by the citizens of the city. This was best illustrated to me on the day of his funeral. I was standing on the side of the road watching the funeral procession pass and standing next to me was a gentleman who had taken time off from his job to pay his respects. Not only that, but this gentleman told me he had been arrested by Officer Burtt on several occasions. After hearing that, my tears turned to laughter for a brief moment.

Burtt...you will never be forgotten.

Officer Burtt was the kind of officer you wanted to have back you up, and the kind of officer that most citizen's were glad he was there to help. I have had the pleasure of working with you brother and I will never forget you, thanks for all you have done.

Burtt, I passed you in the hall at the POC just days before the tragedy. I was on the street when the call went out to block streets so the ambulance could get through unobstructed. I will not forget that moment. May we shake hands again when I get to that precinct where you're at now. God bless.
