Burtt,
I remember the times we worked together plain clothes in the 2nd Pct. and the scrapes we got into. You were a great friend and a joy to work with. I still to this day enjoy telling the stories and
remembering you and the laughs we shared!!

Rest easy brother!

Officer Burt was an amazing man and officer. I got to know him by working Loss Prevention as he would come to my shoplifting apprehensions. He was also one of the funniest people I ever met.

We had just purchased a car and the inspection was dead. My wife was taking it to be inspection and he saw from his patrol car across the street he activated his lights and pointed to the expired sticker. My wife pointed to the expired inspection sticker on his unit. He laughed turnedoff his lights and just put his hands up like okay you got me. I will forever miss him and his purple suit and hilarious humor.

I used to be the resident manager for Princess Ann Duplexes. William would check on me while I was at work because it was a tough neighborhood. We were friends and he was kind and generous. I feel if he had to do it all again, he’d give his life to save someone else. It’s been 20 years and his impact is still felt. Rest In Peace Burtt.

I hope that even though you may be gone, that your soul be cherished, and that we remain in your eyes. we know that you will watch over us, even if we have problems that are our own. you were there for us when we needed you, and we will never forget. you have risked everything, and had something horrible happen. You were always a hero, and will remain one in our eyes. Love out to you my brother in blue.

Burtt,

When I was a rookie you were one of the veterans that looked out for me. Being on the same platoon with you I learned what it meant to be a good street cop, thank you.

Our lives crossed on that February day. I was working in my office on the 2nd floor (my sister worked with me in the same office). I will never forget hearing a gunshot and looking out the window and seeing what happend. My sister (who was an EMT volunteer) was running down the stairs and trying to get out the door to help. We had to stop her for a moment as that terrible person was still there. When she finally got to you, she with the help of others did the best they could. All I could do is watch, I didnt know how to help. That evening my neices told me they knew you and what a great person and influance you were on them. They said you would always stop and talk to them when they were walking down the street. I think about you often and wish I had known you ... Rest in peace.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
