I had the opportunity to meet your parents this past weekend at the COPS Parent Retreat. Both are wonderful people and it is unfortunate that we have to meet this way. I heard allot about you from them and they are very proud of your law enforcement career. I know they will keep your memory alive and will cherish all of their special memories of you that they carry with them in their broken hearts. Continue to keep watch over them and protect them. You have not been forgotten. You take care Blue Angel and know that you could have worked for me any time as I know you could do the job with honor and respect and be an asset to law enforcement.

J.J. Cheney was an angel in our hour of need. Eternally remembered.
I came to know of Jessica under adverse circumstances. My daughters and I were sitting at a stop light on 610 and Eustace Rd. when a SUV-distracted, speeding, recklessly slammed into us pushing us through the intersection blowing out the back windows and crunching up-totaling our vehicle, threw us around in our car like rag dolls. Leaving me with a concussion and now what I know is permanent damage as arthritis has set in my injuries.
She spent hours with us, like a kind and comforting angel. She offered words of comfort and offered strength to us in our hour of shock and pain.
She waited for the EMT's and came to the hospital and sat by my bedside, discussing various things.
I was deeply saddened when I learned of her passing due to the unsafe conditions on the road. Also the laws about contributory negligence in Virgina had me frustrated. I called and suggested troopers have the bright reflective vests when out handling traffic back then.
Years later I feel my daughter who passed in a similar fashion in 2010 at age of 22 is with her now.
Both ended their lives too soon due to fog-and a driver's unforeseeable accident. She was priceless treasure a real asset to the force, in her short life here.
Now she in in that force in the sky directing the ways and maintaining order for the benefit of all.

I remember the day that Trooper Cheney was killed, as it was on my birthday. She was a friend of a fellow Officer of mine and the news hit her very hard. The thin blue line is guarded by brave Men and Women 24 hours of every day...and shall be until the end of time. Stay in the fight my brothers/sisters in Blue. You will not be forgotten Trooper Jessica Cheney.

I never had the honor of metting Trooper Cheney but I have had the pleasure of calling her sister, Romaine, my friend for the last 14 years. I met Romaine shortly after Jessica passed. I remember hearing about Jessica and being so impressed that a female had made it through the tough trooper academy and was a success in her profession. Her friends and family could not be more proud of her! They remain so proud of her and stay vigilant in keeping her memory alive. I hope as a female police Sergeant I can make her proud and help her family in keeping her legacy alive! Jessica, you will never be forgotten, RIP sister....

Jessica,
Although you never knew me I had the opputunity to meet your mother on June 22nd 2007. I participated in the Virginia State Police Junior Law Cadets. At the very end of the ceremony when my name was called to receive your award I felt very honored to receive something in your honor for the sacrafice you made to this great Commonwealth. Not many days go by that I don't look at that plaque hanging on my wall or pin my minature lapel badge with your badge number inscribed across it on my dress coat. I just wanted to thank you for your service to the Commonwealth and I hope to join the ranks one day soon. Continue to watch over us brothers and sisters of the badge.

Great Christmas but I sure do miss you Jessica!! It was 14 yrs ago today, around this time, that I last saw you alive, felt your hug as you bent down to kiss my cheek & HEAR you tell me you love me as you headed out the door back to Stafford and me to rest up for Midnights at HPD. Christmas will always be the last day I remember getting to actually see that SMILE of yours.
JJ, I hope you can feel what I feel in my heart for you still!! I will stay strong, 90% of the time, but know that we have families being added to our police survivor family too often now. Stay with me and help keep me strong those days so I can be strong for others. As always, I LOVE & MISS YOU!!!

Hey JJ,
The picture above is the picture that hangs over my fireplace and it's the one that has me looking at your hands so often... The only thing that we were allowed to see, touch, hold, before they closed your casket. The hands that look so much like my own. They often say it's the little things that trigger memories and that is so true!!
I can't believe it's been 13 yrs since you were taken from us. I miss those late night calls as I dispatched or because we were both just up since we were on the same shifts at the time. I miss our Girl's Nights of pulling out the sofa bed at your house in Stafford, watching movies, catching up on the scuttlebutt between our friends & family members and eating junk food. I even miss the way you used to constantly rub the tips of your fingers back & forth as you drove that annoyed me so much in life but would give anything to see now!!
I know you are always with us but I would give just about anything to have one more day with you. To have gone to DC w/ you, Eric, Mom & Dad... Have good and bad days, today I feel reflective and wish you were here for me to talk to. What no one gets is that in life, you & I always had each other, we knew everything about each other... Good, bad & the ugly, we had each others back no matter what. Who do I talk to now that will get it?
LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!

This time 13 years ago I had no idea that the rest of my life would hold such an empty spot. My love for you remains the same and my heart still suffers the loss of your presence, your loving words to your "Daddy" and the soft hugs that were always there for me. I pray my life is good enough to earn eternity in your presence. Love and miss you so much.

I was going to put a new bow on your sign today, but it looked like someone beat me to it. I talked about you in roll-call and made sure my squad knows how great you were to be around. Everyone that knew you wishes that you were still with us, running calls and chasing bad-guys. Thanks for being you, my friend. May Peace be with you and your family.

Jessica, we are approaching another Christmas without you being here. We will not have the fun and enjoyment we always experienced with your happiness with simple things. Your mother tries to make Christmas a special event for all of us, but knows she cannot replace our little girl who was the driving force for Christmas fun and activities. She tries very hard for us. She gives so much and keeps trying to make us not worry about her. She doesn't smile like she used to at silly statements and our activities. It seems as if your passing took her heart with you. I'm sure that one of these days she will enjoy life again. As you know, I love and miss you so very much.

Jessica
I have tears streaming down my face after reading the loving reflections left in your honor, especially those from your family. I am going to my second parents retreat in a few weeks since my son was killed in 2005 and was trying to identify parents from another site as I wanted to honor their child by leaving a reflection here. There were many officers I had remembered, but you were a new hero for me. When I saw your photo, I was immediately struck by how much you looked like your dad in his picture. I then read that you were part of a family that had devoted itself to protecting and serving.
Thank you for your service to your country as a Marine and to your community as a trooper. My son was also your fellow Marine so I must bid you semper fi.
I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. I share your parents' anquish in losing a beloved child which surely has to be life's greatest sorrow. I thank your family for their contributions to fellow survivors.
I am so sorry that you were robbed of your life at such a young age, but am grateful that in your short years, you were able to live passionately and accomplish so much.
With the deepest respect,
