Reflections for Patrol Officer John Kevin Lamm

Kevin, you now have a street here in North Pole, Alaska named in your
honor and memory. The unveiling of the street sign was 6 years to the
day that you were taken from us, the ceremony was short and simple
but very special. "Kevin's Way" will be a permanent reminder of the
sacrifice you made that New Years Day in 98. I hope, as you look down
you can smile and be proud of all you accomplished in your short 26
years and know that this street sign is also a token of a lot of love. Below
is the poem that was read for the street naming ceremony, I hope you
liked it - it is you!

"Kevin's Way"

It is in rememberance of a fine young man
Whose goal in life was to "do the best that I can!"
He was a young adult who went from life before his time,
A handsome guy - in memory lives on - still in his prime.
He was and still is - son, kid brother, policeman and a dad -
Who gave of himself to others - the very best that he had!
He loved his job that he had chosen and did it without strife -
but his personal joy was his son Elliot, the light of his life.
Though it is not possible to know the reason why -
"Why did he have to die?"
A helper to others - that was "Kevin's Way" -
To make the most of his time, each and every day.
The blue light of the police life - that was his aim -
It is in his memory that this street bears his name!

With lots of love always

I never met this officer, but I've been to his city to visit family, and may have seen him on the street. Bless him for his service and his sacrifice, and know that he will never be forgotten.

Dear Kevin,
Never thought I'd be leaving a message for you on a computer, but why not since you've seen me talk, cry, hurt for you- there is so much in side I have still only for you. You are irreplaceable, missed and loved. While I cant say it to your face I have faith you can at least see mine and know my heart. Thats how it has to be, I'm ok with that. I cant tell you enough how much I've learned from you not just through death but life as well. Ive learned about our community, people, family, our son, you, me, and life and death itself. I am afraid of nothing, getting through your loss was hell. There will be hard times I'll face but I can handle it. I have so much to be thankful for and most of my lifes lessons can be traced back to you. Thank you, you are my hero too. I love and miss you- until I can see you again, I'll just keep feeing you by my side. Weve got a new song- Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. Jul

Hi Dad,
How is it up there? I wish I could see you. I remember going to the movies, the moto-cross races and how you would eat a whole Pepperoni pizza. I remember playing foozball, going to Chena Hot Springs, riding the snowmachine, fishing, riding in your truck, turning the siren and lights on your patrol car on in the garage to scare me, I also remember how you would call me everynight to say good night to me. I keep all of your things in a cedar chest in my room. With Love, Elliot

"Kevin", as known by family and friends, will be remembered, missed and loved forever. His childhood dreams came true when he became a police officer, something he wanted to be from the age of 5/6 yrs. old. Kevin couldn't have been happier with his chosen career, and was prepared to give his all whenever that time would arise. Kevin gave his all that New Years Day when he laid down is life for others. Kevin was so full of life and love and he lived his life in a way that has made me so proud to be his mother, I love you "Kev" rest in eternal piece - till someday we meet again.

A rose once grew where all could see,

sheltered beside a garden wall,

And, as the days passed swiftly by,

it spread its branches, straight and tall...

One day, a beam of light shone through

a crevice that had opened wide -

The rose bent gently toward its warmth

then passed beyond to the other side...

Now, you who deeply feel its loss,

be comforted - the rose blooms there -

Its beauty even greater now,

nurtured by God's own loving care

I love you, have loved you, and will always love you!

Kevin, every day I thank you for what you did for me that night. You had the opportunity to save yourself, but that wasn't you or how you did this job. You stayed and by staying you saved my life, at the cost of your own. Your dad said it best when he remembered you as "a cop's cop". You did things the right way because that's the only way you knew how. Half our officers weren't working here when you were killed so they never got to know you, but those of us who had that privilege make sure they know about you. Kevin, I know that wherever you are you're watching us and keeping us safe. My best friend, then and now.

I deeply regret the loss of this and all officers in the world. I was stationed at Eielson AFB(11-73 till 05-75). My former flt . sgt. at the base became a Fairbanks Police Officer. I've seen them in action, and met some. I respect the fine work they do each day! So on behalf of myself and John Baus(formerly 5010 SECURITY POLICE Sqdn),now retired or a Fairbanks officer I pray for and wish this family and all others the best,REMEMBER - THEY SERVED WELL AND ARE NOW IN A BETTER PLACE!

Kevin, I think of you often. What an honor it was to work with you. You were a great officer and a great guy. What a terrible loss to the community it is, not having you working for them anymore.

Until we meet again. God bless.

"The Final Inspection"
The police officer stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, police officer. How shall I deal with you? Have you turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?"
The police officer squared his shoulders and said "No Lord, I guess I ain't, because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep. Though I worked alot of overtime when the bills just got too steep. I never passed a cry for help though at times I shook with fear. And God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much but if you don't I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne where saints had often trod. As the police officer waited quietly for the judgement of his God.
"Step forward now police officer, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat in Heaven, You've done your time in Hell."

For those of us who lay our lives on the line everyday for little or no thanks-
And those who gave their lives to uphold the highest, most honored and respected position in life. You are one of those people Kev. You will always be honored and remembered.
You will always have a place in my heart and in my prayers.
Your friend,
-Dena
