Reflections for Chief of Police Wallace Lee Clinard

It has been 12 years since Officer Clinard gave the ultimate sacrifice.
He is not forgotten. We remember our hero's.

Memorial day today. They had a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall set up in Oak Grove today. Really a site to see. So many names. Anyways I'm doing about the same, not much but it's not bad. Missing my old dog "Ranger". Check on him for me. He was a good friend like you were.

Merry Christmas Wally. I got my usual stash of Diet Pepsi, always hits the spot. Had'nt been up in your patrol area in along time but last time I saw lots of huge houses. Their nice but they just don't fit in with the Cross Plains, Orlinda landscape to me. I guess nothing can last forever. Anyways I hope your family is doing well. I know their about grown up by now. My Jennifer is 25 and in Africa working for the Government. I hate to admit it but we're getting old. Take care and Merry Christmas.

Well Uncle Wallace it has been 10 years that you left us. I tell people all the time about you and what a great man you were. Just last month I meet a lady at the nashville flea market who was from crossplains and told her I was your niece and she said yes I remember wallace he was a great man. People of crossplains will never forget you and never will I. Brandon talks about how you used to play with him by putting the handcuffs on him when he was little and it would scare him and how you would turn the sirens on the patrol car on and he thought that was great. He is 19 now and has grown alot. Maybe one day he will slow down and become a great man like you. Katlyn is 17 and is going to graduate in may. Valinda is 14 and has grown bigger than me. I tell rene my boyfriend about you and how wonderful you were and in my heart always will be. I LOVE YOU and will always keep you memory alive in my heart. So through me you always live. Until I see you again. LOVE YOU! P.S Tell my grandad hi and my Grannie Shelton I Love and miss her. Always in my heart Stacy.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It will be ten years tomorrow since you died and I can honestly say that not many days go by that I don't think about you. I not only lost a commrad at arms, but a true friend as well. You taught me alot about being a cop, how to treat and talk to people. Earn their respect by using your heart rather than the badge and weapons. I tell people about you and always say you were a peace officer not a police officer. I'm to busted up to be a cop anymore but I try and use your teachings in civilian life. I owe you alot. I miss you terribly.

Wallace,
You are the one who gave me my chance in law enforcement and the opportunity to go to the academy. Thank you. Also, thank you for all the guidance you showed me. I will always remember my first shift on the road after I graduated. I can still hear your voice calling me on the radio and congratulating me.

I had your picture added to your page "Chief". I can't forget about the day when "Carolyn" dispatched out that you had died. Eric, Meecham and several others were outside getting in our cruisers ready to start the shift when the traffic came over the radio. I did'nt see a dry eye there. You really meant alot to us all. I slowed down and was much more careful after that and preached safety, safety, safety to the new guys. I gave you my word in the hospital that your sacrafice would never be forgotten and I won't let you down. Talk to you later.
