Reflections for Corporal David Walter Hathcock

We still remember you David. God Bless.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

On the 10th anniversary of Corporal hathcock's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. To the family of Deputy David Hathcock I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. No love greater than that to lay down your life for a friend. On September 23, 1997 you and Ed did just that. Not just for each other, but for the citizens of our great state of North Carolina. So much needs to be said, so much needs to be given, but nothing can ever replace or repay the deed inwhich you both paid that day. Ever time I pass through Cumberland County, I still remember that day. Thank you for the job you did, the service you provided and being there when when a brother in grey needed you the most. God bless you and your family.

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 9th anniversary of your end of watch. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and protect those still out on patrol watching over the Thin Blue Line. You are a true hero and heroes never die, you will never be forgotten.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.
These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

David,
I got a new trainee the other day that seems so full of himself. He thinks that he is invincible and that the little piece of tin on his chest will protect him forever. I took him by your grave Monday night and showed him that bad things can happen to the best of people. I told him how good you were at the job and how you were one of hte nicest people that I had ever met. I hope it had some effect. We all still miss you and you are remembered often. I drive by the house everyday that I'm working and take a quick look just to check for anything that is out of place. Wish you were here brother.

While I didn't know This brave officer, I feel as if I did b/c we are all family. I knew SGT Lowery and I have spent alot of time in the Ft. Bragg-Fayetteville area with the Nat'l. Guard, so I felt a connection to the loss.
What a senseless and cruel act. The Old North State lost one of its finest when he was murdered. He now walks the streets of Heaven's beat with St. Michael. God Bless and be safe.
