I have the privilege of knowing Annette Deguch due to the recent death of my husband, Chuck. One of the last outings Chuck and I had before he died, we stood outside the entrance to Southlawn Cemetery the day they took Nick Polizotto to his resting place. We stood with an American Flag and our hands over our hearts. I cried for Nick and all the other officers before him and their wives and their famililies. Chuck is with you Paul and Nick and Scott and I know you will welcome him.

Paul

We went to the academy together, and even though I did not know you very well it was shocking to believe that anyone in our class would have their life taken so tragicly. Rest in peace, and all of our prayers are with you and your family.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Sadly I didn't know Corporal Deguch. However, I didn't have to know him to understand he was a Hero. He was a Hero everyday when he put on his uniform and marked 10-41. He was a Hero for fighting the good fight and doing so right up until the very end. Most importantly, he was a Hero to his wife, children, and those who loved him and now miss him so much. My hearfelt prayers are with Corporal Deguch, Corporal Polizzotto, Patrolman Norby, and every other Police Officer who place their lives on the line daily to protect their communities. May God be with them and their families always.

Paulie:

As the deaths of Scott and now Nick have hit us hard, it brings me back to that night in August that changed our lives forever. We pray often that this would never again happen to our South Bend Police Department family, but knowing that they are a strong union, they will push through these tragedies and continue to perform their duties making you, Scott, and Nick proud.
Not a day goes by that Tracie and I don't think of Annette and your children, We miss you Paul.

Paul:

As always…where do I start….Today is our 16th wedding anniversary. I mentioned to someone that I was going to buy myself flowers (never did get around to it) and then some were delivered to my door…thanks to a sweet caring person that I came in contact with today. I like to think that you had some influence and touched her heart!

This has been such a sad week for the South Bend Community. Monday was the 1 year anniversary of Scott’s death. Tuesday, Nick was shot. What is this city coming to? My heart goes out to the families of Scott, and Nick, to the South Bend Police Dep’t and to the South Bend Community for having to live through another officer’s death. So, many people touched by the violence. So many lives changed forever. I know our lives would be so different if you were here. The children & I still talk about you. I have tried to keep your memory alive for them. They really could use your influence in their lives as they grow. I know you are watching over us…wish you were here.

Love ya & miss ya so much,

Annette

Paul:
Its been 10 years now since you were taken away from all of us.
I just wanted to let you know that you are not forgotten and that you still have a positive impact on my life.
You were #1 of the three friends lost since I started at the Deparment.
I will never forget what you said to me and you will forever live in my heart and soal as a friend, mentor, and HERO.
God bless your wife and children.
They have shut down Daves Gym buddy, I still remember when I needed a spot and you would yell some silly saying from across the gym.
And the time I was on the phone with Tammy and you yelled " Post, can you ask your wife if you can have permission to come over and do your set".
You made me laugh buddy and you are still remembered.
Rest now brother, I've got it from here.

I used to work out with Paul and was excited to tell him that I was going to the IDOC. I graduated the Academy and was on duty August 18 of 1997 and remember talking to him at Daves Gym.
Paul was very happy for me and we joked as we said Yeah Post I only have to deal with these guys for a few hours but you got them for a lot longer.
Who would have known that I would have to look at the face of the killer of my friend every Tour of Duty.
Paul' you have my promise that I will uphold the law and as you say "DO the JOB".
You are on my mind every day I report to duty and even though your gone your dedication and honor is what I base my carreer on.
You are missed and still remembered.

Take Care and God Bless
My Brother
