Your heroism and service is honored today, the 13th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.
Rest In Peace.

Today you would have turned 45. If it were anyone else, I might be filled with sadness, but you were such an amazing man. One to be proud of knowing. It's such an honor to have been a part of your life. You will always live on through your family and through your contributions.
Happy Birthday. I'll always keep your memory with me.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Robbie..my partner..my friend..I miss you so much. We backed each other up every night..that aweful night I went home sick and I wasn't there for you. A memory I can't get out of my mind. You meant more to me than words could ever say. I stay in contact with your wife and children and see you when I look at them. Now I have twins of my own, something you knew before me. What an awesome Trooper, Dad, Husband, and Friend anyone could ever have. I wish I could go back in time and be right there with you working on I95..I wouldn't take so much for granted anymore. You're always in thoughts, Robbie..your family is always in my prayers. Please know you'll never be forgotten as well as your hard work and dedication. Love ya, Rob..miss you more than you could even imagine. Jackie

I had never really known Robbie except for saying hello to him at court. After his death I learned that he was a dedicated Trooper who specialized in arresting drunk drivers. Ironically, it was a drunk driver that took Robbie's life while working interstate 95 in Miami.
When most people are asked how they want to be remembered, most say "someone who will be remembered as an honest, caring and one who lived life to the fullest." Robbie met all of the afore mentioned criteria and then some.
To make sure that Robbie's life was not taken in vain, an annual police charity bicycle ride was established in his memory and honor in December 1997. All proceeds from the 1997 Tour de Force "A Ride For Remembrance" went to Robbie's wife and children. This past year our 4th annual Tour de Force bicycle ride from North Miami Beach to Orlando raised over $19,000.00 for the families of three fallen law enforcement families in South Florida.
Even though Robbie is no longer with us, he will always be with us in our hearts and legs as we ride in his honor each year to help other law enforcement officer's families. God bless you Robbie.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Trooper Smith. What an outstanding record for apprehending drunk drivers. I will apply to be a police officer in a year, and hope that I am able to be as effective an officer as he was. Rest well, you couldn't have spent your short years here any better.
