Reflections for Police Officer Anthony W. Sanchez

Anthony, I remember that day and I remember Michael was crying, blaming himself for not being there. Now, both of you are together again, patrolling the gates of heaven. God bless both of you and take care of each other.....Deborah

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Officer Sanchez,
I pass the street that bears your name everyday to and from the academy. I want to thank you for your heroism and for making the ultimate sacrifice. As I look up at your street, I am reminded everyday why I chose this job. Thank you.

I was a recruit in the police academy when you were tragically taken from us. Now, 10 years later, I still remember the bravery and courage everyone said you exhibited every day. Your wife and son should be proud of you, and they should know that many of us think of you from time to time.

Anthony and I were both assigned to the 13th pct on the same day. Not only was Anthony the best cop I have ever worked with he was the best man i have ever known. May 19,1997 was the worst day of my life and changed me forever. i hope someday anthonys son John reads this so he can read about what a great man Anthony was and that his father loved him and his mother Liz very much and talked about them everyday.

Officer Sanchez,
On today, the 8th anniversary of your murder, I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of New York City. At least, the the dirtbag that murdered you never left prison and died there.

Anthony-I never had the opportunity to meet you in person, but from the love the persons around you showed, you must have been quite a man! Everyone that you touched around you misses you terribly. There will never be a day that goes by that I don't think about how horribly that Sunday night was for everyone at that scene..Myself and the others carried you out of that building as best we could...Today we all still carry the burden of grief knowing that what we did was our best and that is wasnt good enough..If anything can be said let it be that you will look over us all, as we constantly try to look over each other.
