I lived in a dangerous neighborhood that you protected. I was so sad to hear what happened to you. Thank you for all you did for us. I took lots of photos at your funeral with the intention of giving your family something to keep and cherish. I still have the photo album and I am still searching to find a family member of your's to send it to. God Bless and keep you and may your family be of comfort that you are in good hand now....

I was a basketball team mate of officer McDougal (Skip) at Daemen College, in Amherst. I enlisted and served in the Air Force for over 22 years and recently heard of the tragic and senseless circumstance with which a caring and thoughtful individual like skip was taken. Although he is gone to be with our savior, he will always live on because of how he positively impacted all our lives. When I remember skip, and the positive interaction between us I will always remember him as a brother and a friend. His memory will surely live on with me. To His family continue to be strong and know that his service was not in vain. To Law Enforcement, please continue with your outstanding support within your community you are truly appreciated may God bless and watch over you all.

I was 11 years old when i had gotten the news that my uncle had been shot and killed. One of the most inspirational people in my life had been tooken from me. He was pretty much a second father to me. Helped raised me, took care of me when needed, and was always there through thick and thin. I was still kind of young at the time so I didn't truly get to know him intellectually but I knew for sure he was a very educated man. My mom and dad (his brother) always compared me to him before and after this unfortunate tragedy, so to this day I just try to follow in his footsteps and keep his legacy alive because when you're compared to a great person it's always important to carry out their legacy. I remember my mother coming to me around the time of my uncles death and asked me, would I want to see the suspect (whose name I won't mention) get sentenced to death. Although, obviously distraught about the loss of my uncle, I told her "no" because even death itself wouldn't serve justice or bring my uncle back. And I knew that deep down inside, although his life had been taken, my uncle wouldn't want me to wish death on anyone regardless the situation. Even though I don't have the last name Mc'Dougald on my birth certificate, I will always be a Mc'Dougald as long as I live. So with that being said, here I am, 22 years of age, 11 years after the tragedy, just goes to show we can forgive and never forget. Do I still hate the suspect?... Only because I'm a God fearing woman, no. I refuse to live or die with hate in my blood. Til the day of my demise and beyond, I will always remember the Late Great Charles E. "Skip" McDougald.

I am native to the western New York area. I am also the son of retired Buffalo Police Detective(Internal Affiars Division), Alexander Montalvo Senior. I was about thirteen years old when Police Officer Mcdougald was killed in the line of duty. I remember it very clearly alomost like it was yesterday. I can't believe that it has been this long already. I would like to let the Mcdougald family know that I am very sorry Police Officer Mcdougald's life was taken. I don't know what I would have done if my father was taken from me. I also want the Mcdougald family to know that I am grateful to Police Officer Mcdougald, for serving and protecting me, my family, friends, and loved ones during his eight years of service. I no longer live in Western New York, but I have the honor and privelage of being in the feild of law Enforcement in the state of Florida. Due to the ultimate sacrifice that Police Officer Mcdougald, and so many others have made, I was able to grow up and now return the favor by serving as a Law Enforcment Officer. Even though it has been this long since Police Officer Mcdougald, was killed in the line of duty he is not forgotten. Thank you Police Officer Charles Mcdougald.

Police Officer Charles E. McDougald,
The circumstances of your death are as horrendous as any incident that I have ever become familiar with in my time as a state police officer, a city police officer in Washington's MPDC, and as a deputy sheriff in Lake County Florida's homicide unit. To be gunned down by a citizen that we have pledged ourselves to protect is an egregious act. One who would shoot a police officer is destined to be, in my eyes, flushed down the gaping maw of hell. You have brought great honor to both yourself and all law officers on the day you died serving others. You have the respect of every good law officer on the face of the planet. Your are a hero among heros and will be welcomed, I am certain, by the legion of officers who have died in the line of duty before you. You have paid your dues. Lock arms with those other heros and march toward the gates of Heaven. They will always open wide for those obeying our Creator's greatest commandment and acting as soldiers of the law. Well done, Charles,...well done.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I keep the prayer card that I received at your funeral posted in my locker at work as a daily reminder of the dangers of this job. I keep it not only for myself but for others to look at and ask about you. Although I never met you, I feel that I've come to know you simply by looking at your prayer and picture.
Thank you for your service as both a police officer and teacher. God bless.

I remember Officer McDougald. He used to be a sub-teacher at my old high school (Burgard). I remember sitting and talking to him about being a police officer and what goes on at work. I remember asking him about how he finds stolen cars and stuff like that. He used to tell me that he knows his job is dangerous, but someone has to do it. And I can remember saying that I would never be a police officer because I couldn't risk my life for other people. Well, I lied. I'm a officer for Atlanta Police Department now. And I tell people all the time about him and how he used to give him time to sit with us at school. May God continue to keep the family and friends of my now Fallen Brother....

To Officer Charles McDougald and his loved ones:
On this the ninth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
Reading the loving reflections about your beloved Charles ("Skipper") gives us some understanding of what a kind and honorable man he was, and what he meant to his family and friends.
Charles, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Officer McDougald. I am humbled by your valor, courage, and dedication. I am so sorry your life was taken from you at such a young age when you had a lifetime ahead of you. How your loved ones must miss you.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Charles gave to his community as a police officer and a school teacher and to the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 9, 1997.

At the beginning of every shift, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.
Tonight, April 9, 2006 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Charles E. McDougald who died in the line on this date nine years ago.
When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.
Officer McDougald’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.
