Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Brian E. Meilbeck

Well, 27 years and a couple of excellent therapists later, I am finally ready to post a reflection. Brian was my big brother and best friend. He was there for me through everything for my entire life. We had endless stories of our childhood escapades. Mostly, they are too painful to try to remember. When Brian died, I shut down in a way. I tried to put it all out of my mind. Life didn’t seem very fun anymore.

To the firefighter who posted, thank you. You are all very brave and risked your lives. Your story horrifies me but it also makes me feel better in a way. You make me feel loved. You tried to save him and to save his family from loss. You cared. Again, thank you.

Natalie, if you are interested in contacting me, I am open to that.

I am finally doing better but it is hard. So hard.

I really don't know what to say. I have missed Brian every day for the last 27 or so years. He is my hero and hopefully an inspiration to all that knew him. I cherish the times we spent together before his untimely death. I am so proud of him but I miss him so much every day. You have a fantastic son Brian who misses as much as I do. R. I. P. Brian.

Yours was the first LE funeral I attended, Brian. I graduated from the academy the prior year. Little did I know that I would attend the funeral of my academy-mate, Ofc. Emily Morgenroth (Sacramento PD), 6 months after yours.

Rest well, Hero...

Thank you for everyone who keeps posting on here over the years. I often forget about this page because its still hard to face facts, but it does help reading these once and awhile, even though it brings me to tears. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I'm doing good and I hope you guys are too. Once again thanks.

I was one of 3 Firefighters, who responded to the shooting of Brian. We were posted around the block waiting for the all clear to roll up, when Dispatch came on yelling "Shots fired, officer down"..... the chill in her voice...... we looked at each other and said, "lets go". Soon as we pulled up Brian's training officer, Jimmy Downs, started yelling at us to get the H@*! Out . We spotted Brian on the ground next to the house and with out a second thought, said we have to get him.
Curt pulled in front of the house next door and we jumped out. I went into auto pilot, almost out of the police academy, and got to his side . The ambulance pulled up and Russ and I grabbed him and scrambled to the ambulance.
It's been 21 years today.... on a day much like today.... sunny... I still remember it like it was today....looking into his face, talking to him at the station...Great Man who left us to soon.

Brian was a friend and an academy classmate and law enforcement brother. I see his face inside my locker every time I open it. It serves as an every day reminder of the sacrifice he made and the vulnerabilities we all face when we serve. Be safe my brothers. RIP Brian

Brian: I think of you at every class reunion I attend. Your picture is always posted and when classmates have asked what happened to you, I tell them. I'll never forget you dressing up as a nun for Halloween while we attended Catholic school together.

It has been 19 years. It was my sons first day on duty by himself. He responded to the call too. I will never forget that day.

I went to the Police Academy at the Sacramento Public Safety Center we were in class 16. He was from Michigan and had come to California to go to school and have a better life. I remember having a great time with him on Lake Tulloch prior to graduation. After graduation he joined me at Yuba County. I have thought about him everyday ever since and will never forget him.

Brian was an honest to goodness good guy. He often put others before himself. One night I was booking evidence and had not eaten yet, we were going call to call. Dispatch was sending me to a fight call, I was mumbling under my breathe how hungry I was as I packed up my stuff. Brian and his training officer were just coming in with their dinner. Brian gave me half of his hamburger, and told me to be safe. Not many would do that.
He was a great friend that us missed.

I didn't find out whom you were until not too long ago, When I went into the Yuba County Sheriff's office for a ride along. Your photo was on the wall in the lobby. Along with YCSO Deputy Don Brown's photo. I then wanted to know who you were, what your history was and what was your purpose. After reading and hearing of things about you and how your life was taken. Although I have always wanted to be a sheriff...You your self Inspired me more to become a one. The Fact your life was taken angers, sadens, and inspires me. To help take out the bad people in this world. I am now a cadet with Yuba County and I look at your photo everytime I go in....I Thank you for the inspiration. And for your service. May you never be forgotten and your soul live in peace.
