Bryan..I made many trips to wishard. I would sit at your bedside, hold your hand and talk to you! You were my brother from another mother! You were always there for me....from 6th grade on. I was there at your bedside the day the decision was made to let you make your journey to Heaven. Brenda was very surprised to see me as were the rest of your family. You passes away quickly and painlessly. That is one birthday I will never forget! Love you Bry!

Not a week passes that I don't think of you. Robert had you sit in the office with your back to me. He had this smirk on his face. He said I think you know this guy....There you was! You gave me that smile and I was "what the hell you doing here"? You paid the ultimate price for doing what you always wanted to do. I remember when you was a Manager at B;. You wanted this line of work then. I tried to talk you out of it. There was no stopping you. And that I admireed about you. You never gave up on doing this, and you was good at it. I've tried on several occasions to write on here but I just coulden't pull out the words. I still miss you buddy. I will always remember you.

I still miss you everyday, you were my best friend and how I miss our conversations and the phone calls from you for baby advice, or just to share the new things Kaycee was doing. From the time we were small until you passed you were the person I knew without a doubt would always be there to stick up for me, comfort me or make me see things clearly when I was wrong. You were an amazing person and words can not describe the person you were. I hope you knew how loved you were and the impact you made on everyone who knew you!

I remember Brenda (my classmate) walking me into Bryan's ICU room and they had him pumped full of fluids and medically induced coma, that wasn't easy to stomach. Bryan loved my sister early on and that is how I got to meet/know him. He and I went to Lisa Howard's kegger party then straight to work 3rd shift at the truck stop in Whiteland. Bryan introduced me to the music of The Doors and Jimmy Buffett. He taught me everything I knew about working on cars he was a chevy lover, but he turned to Ford's later on in years. He used to breed siberian huskies, smoids, and alaskan malamutes. Kegger's at the graveyard. Bruce singing Knockin on heaven's door at the beautiful funeral. All his hot rod's I helped fix up and drive. Him working at Ruth's sandwich and cocktails downtown Indy and me hanging out there. So much more to my fallen friend, miss ya Nick

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Sgt. Bryan Northern and his loved ones:

On this the ninth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.
Reading his brother's loving reflection about your beloved
gives us some understanding of what a kind and honorable young man he was.

Bryan, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Sgt. Northern. I am humbled by your valor, courage, and dedication.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Bryan gave to his community and the citizens of Indiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 23, 1997.
