I went to high school with Danny. I remember him coming home after Basic and how excited he was about his future. He was truely a good hearted guy and I'm proud to have known him. Rest in peace, my friend.

I met Danny when we started the Memphis Police Academy in 1995. We were in the 72 class- gold group. Danny lived in Millington and I lived in Ripley so we both went the same direction on Highway 51. We would stop at the fruit stand on the way home and talk. Danny would talk, especially about how much he loved his family. He loved the army and in his own words he was "green to the bone." Danny had been in special forces, but he never bragged about it. Danny loved his country, his family and his God. What was not to like about Danny? After graduation Danny went to the south precinct north of the interstate on the evening shift. I eventually ended up at the south precinct north of the interstate on the midnight shift and met Danny on a call. After the call, I remember that he wanted to see my pocket knife. As we stood there in the front yard the only light was from the front porch light. Danny looked at my pocket knife and gave his approval before handing it back. Danny was happy and in his element. I was off the night Danny had his accident. We all gathered at the MED and we took turns sitting in intensive care with Danny. When my turn came I sat next to Danny who was in a coma and held his hand. The tears fell. Then there was the sea of blue from the church to the cemetery in Millington. The salute, the bagpipes and the valkyries carried Danny away. I remember speaking with Danny's family and telling them how much Danny had told me that he loved them. Since Danny, we have lost Don Overton, John Robinson, Anthony Woods, Timothy Warren and Martoiya Lang. There will be more. On August 27, 2003 I was riding in the east precinct in 327 on the delta shift. Anthony Woods was riding in 327 on the charlie shift. I got an alarm call north of the interstate in 326 ward. "Little Woods" got the next call which was a domestic call in 327. "Little Woods" was shot and killed and the calls kept coming like nothing even happened. Why didn't the dispatcher give me the domestic? It is not for us to know. On July 3, 2011 I was working in Felony Response Office at 201 Poplar when we got word that there was an active shooter at the Double Tree Hotel and an Officer was down. We got into cars four deep in a hurry to get to the scene. When we got to the hotel the elevator had been shut down to restrict movement. We walked the stairwell up the sixth floor, where Officer Timothy Warren had made the ultimate sacrifice. It turned out to be a domestic. Officer Warren was on his way to work when he heard the call go out and pulled up to the hotel in his personal vehicle. Thinking it was an active shooter, he did not hesitate and he went immediately to the threat to protect his fellow man. A true hero. I have been lucky to have served with such individuals and they should be an inspiration to us all. The losses are all painful, but for me Danny's loss was deep. Danny was not as well known because he had been on the job for less than two years, but for those of us in the 72 class he will never be forgotten. Danny was a warrior, a son, a father, a husband and our brother.

I served with Danny Weekes in the U.S. Army, at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California (1988-89). We were members of Class 01RU47W0189, Russian Basic Course. We have created a Facebook page for those who were members of our class, and there are a number of pictures of Danny posted there. If any of his family or friends would like to see these pictures, email me. RIP, Danny.

While I was too young to remember meeting you I have had the honor of growing up around, and eventually becoming a member of your amazing family. I thank God everyday for having your daughter in my life and this June we will have been married for five years. Your memory is carried everyday by our family and especially your granddaughter Noel, that I know you watch over smiling, who brightens the day of everyone she comes into contact with. She is told about you all the time and constantly talks about her "Opa".

From having your son as a best friend, your daughter as a loving wife, and the rest of your family constantly in my life, I can say whole heartedly that while you are no longer here with us on Earth, you will always be in our hearts and never forgotten. It is an extreme honor of mine to be able to play Amazing Grace in your memory every year at the Police and Fire Memorials here in Memphis. You made the greatest sacrifice giving you life protecting the people of this city and you will always be known as one of my heroes.

and I did a pretty good job of it as you know
I have learned to live with my self and work on forgiving myself everyday....I can only hope that day comes

Dear Danny

We have yet again started a new year without you...It is still so very difficult. I, as well as many others I'm sure, miss so many things about you. Your big happy laugh that would come out of nowhere and light up a room and those great big bear hugs. I remember the day you were saved at West Pensacola Baptist Church...Easter Sunday 1979. Knowing you're with your heavenly Father comes a strength that few understand.

Hey Danny,
It's been a long time but it hasn't gotten any easier. I come by to see you all the time but I've always been unable to leave a reflection. I remember all your firsts like they were just yesterday, 1st Felony on Norris Rd., 1st Fight on Dunnhaven, 1st car chase ending on the Parkway. You were the best Rookie I had come out of the Academy there wasn't much to teach you. Most of all I enjoyed our discussions and miss them today even if you never admitted I was right. You just fit in North of the Interstate. Miss You!!

Well brother it has been eleven years since you left this world...and I still remember the good times we had in the academy (June 1995, 72nd)…and the brotherhood we all shared at the South Precinct…me, you, Jeff, Tony, Keith and Carl. I still haven't found anything that comes close to the fun we had riding "north of the interstate" in 1996 and 1997.

Once at the Mapco, Elvis Presley at Alcy (Ms Linda’s store) you bought my 3 year old son a package of candy. He still talks about that…he’s 14 now. You may be gone from my sight but you will always live on in my memory.

Your Brother in Blue,
Curtis

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Mr. Weekes I never got to meet you but from what I have learned from your son and daughter...I have a feeling you are so much like my Dad. He is a career fighter and would do anything to help anyone no matter what the danger or situation. You served your country in the military and tried to continue that with the police department. You daughter Danielle is engaged to my brother Kenny and your son Jonathan is one of his best friends. Kenny and our family love them like they are already family. I just wanted you to know that you have 2 of the most wonderful, caring, honest kids I have ever met. They would do anything for anyone. I have been blessed with 3 caring brothers of my own and have been just as blessed to have Danielle as a sister and Jonathan as another brother...They are a 'reflection' of you and your life.

You were an unexpected gift. I was an instant mother at 23 to an 11 year old...wow!... I will be visiting your resting place in Memphis soon. It was such an honor to have you in my life. Thank you for the precious memories...you taking home economics in the 7th grade...how many people know that you could ride a unicycle when you were 12? They say it gets easier with time. I'm still waiting for that day.
