Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Luther Frederick Klug

Hard to believe it has been 27 years since we lost you. You are still loved and remembered. Becky and I texted each other on July 15 and 16. Losing you was amplified this year by the death of a local Fargo PD officer Jake Wallin on Friday, July 14. He was only 23, three months on duty. Shot and killed while on a traffic stop. I know if you were alive you would be here for the funeral and procession.

Love you.

See you again... just not yet.

Deputy Sheriff Klug,
On today, the 25th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Dakota County. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Luther and Geri came into the jail one year on Halloween, all dressed up. They looked SO cute together, as they always did. Geri lost her partner WAY too soon. So proud to see that Jordan is following in his fathers footsteps! Luther would be SO proud of him. RIP Luther. We won't forget.

2D,

You are still deeply missed. You would be so proud of Jordan. I know you would enjoy getting to know my son Jacob. I will see you again...just not yet.

Love you,

Danny

I had the benefit of having Luther as a friend and a firearms instructor in the multi county training unit I supervised. We had many rounds of ammo expended between us trying "what if's" and trying to out shoot each other! Many good times.

Your memory lives on, Luther.

This should have been the time Luther would have been contemplating retirement, looking back on a job well done for many years. Instead, we remember our friend who was taken from us way too early.

I was fortunate to have started at the DCSO two weeks before Luther, and also to have him as my partner for our early years. Unfortunately, I was also the second deputy at the scene of his accident...a day I will never forget.

You are never far from our memories, Luther.

I did not have the privilege of meeting you, but I know your son very well. I see his strengths and qualities that you passed on to him, and I know the similar feeling of carrying on your father's watch. Many do not know of your sacrifice, many still don't understand. Yet the light you brought into this often dark world shines on through those who still love and remember you. Your watch never forgotten, your sacrifice never ignored, your courage and passion that still lives on today, in Jordan and in all of us.

Your son Jordan graduated from MSU:Mankato in Law Enforcement this year. You would be so proud of him. I gave him your coffee mug from your desk.

I miss you deeply.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the fourteenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you for I know both their pain and pride are forever.

I can't believe it's already been 13 years. It feels like just the other day when we were parked at the CF Budget Mart. The "CFPD wolves in sheeps clothing" drawing, I still laugh.

I thank the Lord that you rescued me after my life changing car accident on March 27th, 1994. If it wasn't for you Luther, I would not be here today. I think of you often and look forward to seeing you again someday in heaven!

Blessings to you-- Brother!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Deputy Sheriff Klug, your sacrifice has not been forgotten. Your killer received 4 years in prison for killing you - what a terrible injustice.

Rest in peace.

Luther, you are missed every day. Your niece, Julia, has decided against becoming a police officer to pursue another avenue of service to our country. She has joined the MN Army National Guard. She hopes that you will be proud of her. I know you would be because you understand the calling to protect those you love. God bless your memory, Love, Becky
