Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

I was a rookie police officer in the 4th District. In 1970 I was assigned to a foot beat on 14th Street. I was allowed to ride in a patrol car to fill in when one of the officers was off duty. I often rode with JF Young. He had a significant influence on my development as a police officer. I later became a Detective, then a US Secret Service Agent, a prosecutor and a Circuit Judge. In all those roles I remembered things I was taught by JF Young.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Like you, I was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department (Class #191). I left the MPDC in 1970 to join the Pennsylvania State Police.

I read the circumstances of your death. In simple terms, you are a true hero. Anyone who wears a badge and approaches an individual to make an arrest is placed at a severe disadvantage. Because we must think and act as a trained professional we must permit those we arrest the first move. Who among us that represents the law has not made himself a target routinely and regularly? Who among us walks another day only because we have been lucky enough not to have confronted the rat and the scoundrel that you did the day he took your life?

Each of us that is retired has not reached the end of his career because he or she is more superior than another law officer. We are simply fortunate to have taken the risks of law enforcement and beaten the odds. Any praise and honor that we receive is because of you and law officers like you. Brave, daring, conscientious and willing to do his duty inspite of the odds.

So on this day and at this time, Officer Jerrard F. Young, I salute you because you have made the sacrifice most of us have never had to make. And those that have made this sacrifice, I am certain, have received you as a fellow hero. They have taken you among them where selfless service, bravery, admiration, comaradrie, respect and honor are more than words. They are the true links that bond one hero to another. A legion of heros who will surely be received by a loving God because you have stood for, lived for and died... for others. As a fellow law-officer, and a mortal being, I find no sin in that.

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

I was just one year old when you left this life for better things. Now I am a police officer in Washington and in DC Superior Court quite often. I have eaten many breakfasts, lunches and a drink or two in the FOP with your picture looking over us all. Just wanted to let you know that you have not been forgotten in Washington.
