Reflections for Officer Benjamin Warren Worcester

Ben,

You were a warrior. You died serving and protecting those in need of help. Your death was a tragic loss. Live hard, ride, fast and die with honor.

You did it all, God Bless.

It's seem to be a lifetime ago that you were taken from us. This week, 22 years ago. There is not a day that goes by that you are not remembered in some way. This week you are in my thoughts more as 4 other officers in Oakland were taken from there loved ones as you were taken from me.I hope you are in a better place and found the true meaning of peace. You will always be in my heart and in my thoughts.

Rest in peace my fellow beat partner. Although it has been many years I still remember that evening like it was yesterday. I wish that call would have not ended the way it did....

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember the day quite well. I was working security at Southland Mall and had earlier, arrested a "484" (theft) suspect from a retail store. After finishing my written report, P.D. had yet to respond to transport my arrest. Our first Sergeant, (S-1) who had arrived early for his shift, offered to look after the suspect until P.D. arrived which allowed me to return to the floor. This Sergeant later told me that Ben was the officer who made the transport. I was told by an extremely reliable source, that Officer Worcester was just exiting the station gate in his vehicle when Jane, the dispatcher put out the disturbance call. Due to the time ratio, I have to assume that Ben had just finished his process at the station jail with the mentioned theft suspect and advised "Com-1" that he would be responding to the disturbance that was not only, just a few blocks away but was sadly, the call that would be directly involved with his ultimate sacrafice. Though, I prayed so hard for God to bless him - somehow, I already knew that he had. He had to! As we surely know that once that oath has been taken and that badge has been issued, you immediately become one of God's children. An Honored Protector! It's hard to believe that it has been almost 20 years since that dark day. It may not be everyday that Ben is on my mind like he was for so long but it is still often to this day. I am still touched deeply by not only his absence but by the memories of when he was still with us. After that day in March, I was asked a few times if somehow, I felt connected with the way things unfolded that day. Truthfully, I never really thought about it until I was asked and though, I had to be slightly reassured, I knew deep down that I wasn't at all. Any cop comming out of that gate at that time, would have been the primary or the first to respond without a doubt. I can't help thinking, that it would have only seemed convenient as I'm sure it is for any Officer during those times when they don't have to travel very far to apply their duties. Though, I only had the pleasure of comming in contact with Ben - maybe a dozen times, I remember laughing at least 10 times out of that dozen and it was usually something humerous or witty as he was leaving. I find it pretty remarkable when two people can do that when basically, they don't really know each other that well. It makes my heart go out to the ones that were genuinely close to him, I'll tell ya! Somebody told me once how we tend to forget something that only makes death seem that much more tragic. We focus too much on the loss instead of keeping in mind that it's only going to be a long time before we see each other again because it's definitely, not forever! Ben, you are very missed my brother! Surely, you're in safe hands and at peace! We will all see you soon enough. Rest easy buddy!
