Posting today from Chief Artie Parker, Ret.
Wellfleet Police Officer Remembered
87 years ago today, Officer Charles D Williams of the Wellfleet Police Department was killed in the line of duty on Main Street at Bank Street.
I interviewed former Massachusetts state trooper and former police chief William Bill Fleming about that fateful day in Wellfleet center.
Chief Fleming, who was a trooper at the time, he had been in court in Provincetown that morning as was Officer Williams. Fleming said he gave Officer Williams a ride from court back to Wellfleet Center. Fleming said between the time he dropped off Officer Williams and drove to Eastham, Officer Williams was struck by a delivery panel truck driven by Darius Horton at Main and Bank Streets.
Fleming said he was flagged down in Eastham and advised to return to Wellfleet Center immediately. Fleming said Officer Williams was transported by private car to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
When asked about the death recorded as July 19th and not the 18th, Chief Fleming said the death certificate was signed by the local medical examiner the day after Officer Williams actually died. The Chief said after completing his responsibilities in Wellfleet Center, he drove to the hospital and Officer Williams had died, commenting he died the same day he was hit by the panel delivery truck.
An inquest was held later and determined Darius Horton, age 16 would not face any charges.
Officer Williams’ daughters included Doris Hatch, former Wellfleet special police officer, crossing guard and co-founder of Hatch’s Fish Market along with her husband Cliff and Evelyn Lynch, who with her husband Ed were the original proprietors of the former coffee shop behind Town Hall.
Between Abiyoyo and the real estate office, there is a bronze plaque that recognizes Officer Williams’ ultimate sacrifice while serving our community. The plaque is part of a bulletin board where notices and ads are attached for the public to read and how Officer Williams continues to serve our town.
As you pass by, tip your cap and thank Officer Williams and the Wellfleet police officers who serve our community.
