Reflections for Patrolman W. G. Willard
Officer Willard was my great uncle. I was born in1953 so I never knew him. His brother ( my grandfather) was SL Willard. SL Willard was a NC highway patrolman. He was one of the originals from the beginning. He went on the patrol in 1929 and retired in 1960. He was born in Yadkinville. He retired in Fort Pierce, Florida where I live, and passed away in 1992. I have many stories and memories of my grandfather and his experiences on the highway patrol. These guys were true heroes in many ways. Keith Hedrick, Fort Pierce, Florida.

My dear Grandfather,
This is the only picture of you that I have ever seen. I don't think that I ever was even told stories about you. The only thing I know about you is that you were lost when my father Jack, your son, was nine years old.
I do so wish that we had gotten to meet each other. Bless you Grandfather, and enjoy the company of both of your children, who have joined you in Heaven. We will get to meet eventually.

You are remembered and respected for your service. Your legacy lives on in the stories our mother told us of you. Stories of generosity, compassion and love of family. These qualities were carried on in our mother, who showed them to us. I feel I know you because of her. My daughter was born Nov. 1, the day you lost your battle. It brings me comfort to know that day holds joy as well as sorrow. I look forward to meeting you one day. Till then, be at peace.

Each year I hear your name read aloud as we honor our fallen officers here in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County area. Unfortunately, the last one read is my daddy's. I just pray his remains the last one. I don't want any new names added to that list. It has been 68 years since you paid the ultimate sacrifice, but you have not been forgotten. Thank you for your service to the people here, and your sacrifice. God rest your soul. Heros Never Die!
