Reflections for Correctional Officer Harrison William "Red" Whalen
Officer Whalen,
On today, the 50th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as a Law Enforcement Officer but for our Country as well when you served with the USN during the Korean War. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

I'm always amazed at when the topic of a biased and broken justice system comes up but it is never talked about from the view that the victims and their families are the ones who suffer from that broken system. If the argument is to be made that the justice system is broken, this is a clear cut example of that brokenness. Seven Correctional Officers dead, not only no charges for the suspect, one of several who were responsible, but a pardon and release from prison which leads to two police officers being shot and killed by the same suspect. Two trials resulting in a hung jury followed by a third trial which lead to an acquittal for the murder of two New York Police Officers, which leads to yet another murder in 1984. A conviction and sentence of 107 years in prison for that murder then leads to a parole in 2009, and somehow our justice system is broken but only because it is biased and unfair to the criminals.
To you sir and the several other brave men who sacrificed and left their families far too soon and far too young, we say THANK YOU, and know that you will never, ever be forgotten. Your assailants will surely face a higher court and form of justice at a later time in a different place. Rest in peace always!!!

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 42nd anniversary year of your death. I am privileged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service.
My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.
