Joseph was my great great grandfather. His name was actually Joseph James Westlake. Not sure where the "W" middle initial on your page comes from. He was born in the UK in 1871. He immigrated to the US with his father and brother when he was a child. When he was killed, he left two young children. My great grandfather was 7 and my great uncle was almost 2. Also, his father outlived him by 7 years.

My family didn't know Joseph since his homicide happened so long ago. But we appreciate his service and are proud to call him our ancestor. RIP.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 111th anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

When the Wall in Washington was being completed, I went to the home of Officer Westlake's son. He was in his 80's and in failing health. He said that he was only a child when his Dad was killed and remembered nothing about him as the incident was not discussed in the family. He asked why after so many years that his sacrifice was remembered and his name placed upon the Wall. I simply said that he was a "brother" and we never forget our fallen members.

Every time I walk by your picture I think how senseless your death was. I hope you had a good life and that you are now with God and proud of the traditions in your department which still hold you in high esteem. Rest easy they carry on in your place.
