Reflections for Patrolman John E. West

Today I was doing genealogical research on my Vollkommer branch and decided to focus on family of Anna Vollkommer who married Thomas West, their son was Patrolman Jack West. I’m happy to see that my cousin Jack has continued to honored for making the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Valley Stream and Nassau County. I have several cousins who presently serve with the Nassau County PD. My brother Tim is a retired NYSP Captain. Several of cousins are retired police officers and two of my nephews are serving police officers in upstate New York. It’s important that people remember that police officers are people with friends and families who love them. I’m happy to find that my cousin Jack served his community so honorably but sad that his wife and children suffered from such a tragic loss. Rest-in-peace cousin Jack.

All are at risk when you sign on to Law Enforcement as a job. Officer West made the ultimate sacrifice sadly. Be at rest Brother, as others still continue the honorable Highway Patrol Bureau police work you did.

Jack West was married to Florence who was my grandmothers sister. I remember when I was going on the police department in 1967 my father (Jack West's nephew) didn't want me to become a patrolman (what we were called back then) because it was too dangerous. My father even took me to the cemetery in Elmont where Jack was buried in an attempt to persuade me to reconsider. It didn't work. I remained on the force for 41+ years. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jack because he was killed three years before I was born but heard many great stories about what a tough guy he was.

I'm like his great great nephew and i know i wasn't alive around his time but i'm sure he was a great police officer. The police life runs through my family. My great great uncle John E. West was a police officer, my great uncle was the commissioner of the Suffolk County police department, my cousin is a private investigator after serving about 40 years. I hope to become a police officer myself. Any ways officer John E. West will always be remembered by me and hopefully many others. Thank you for your service in the police department officer John E. West.
