Reflections for Policeman Roger Renick Warren, Jr.
May 8 Again. Always remember my Brother on this date and many times when I see an officer today.
I think of you when I think of those fellows that my partner and I arrested the late night after you gave your ALL.Desperate as the suspects were they delayed just long enough for us to prevail. Hearing of your shooting while driving down from Bakersfield ,The thought of LAPD being on high alert at that time following your sacrifice made (all) the difference.
I am looking forward to seeing you again when roll call is called in heaven along with so many Centurions that have gone before.

Uncle Roger,
There isn't a National Police Week, or a day that goes by that I don't think about you. Sometimes I just sit and get lost in thought about what it would have been like had you called in sick that night, or just stayed home with the family, or had not turned down Lennox Avenue from Vanowen Street. 51 years ago today, the Warren family was forever changed. That night, a 16 year old suspect took your badge, but we gave you wings, and you gave us a guardian angel who would forever protect us from above. We live through your legacy Uncle Roger. And now you have a great nephew in Roger Michael Ezequiel. It's no coincidence his first name is Roger. He will undoubtedly grow up learning through your stories, life lessons, and traditional Warren humor. It is an honor and a blessing to keep your name strong and true. We love you and will always love you, thank you for watching over us and thank you for being the ultimate cover officer. You gave the ultimate sacrifice, now we'll take it from here, for another year.

Thank you for the songs. Thank you for the moments. I wouldn’t have missed them for the world....... even if I had known they would end in heartbreak. They became memories too soon.

Hi Uncle Roger.. I've come on here hundreds of times to post a Reflection but for some reason I just could never find the words. Although you and I have never met, I feel as if I have known you my entire life. My dad (Mike), Uncle John, Aunt Linda and Aunt Carol tell stories about you all the time - they never get old! We miss you like crazy. Your nephew (my brother, Matt) just had a baby and guess what? He named that perfect little boy after you. You are special Uncle Roger and we all wish you were here!!
Love you Forever.

I know of Officer Roger Warren, Jr., only through the Officer Down Memorial Page. While I never met him, I have come to know him through the reflections left by those that did. He serves as an inspirational reminder that the contributions of one's life cannot be measured by longevity, but rather quality. Thank you Officer Roger Warren for your fidelity to service in our profession...and to Nancy and Kelley; thank you for sharing Roger with all of us.

Sgt. Wiltrout and the Family of Officer Warren:
I had no idea in '67 that I would be living in the Valley the next and that I would serve in the very station you honored by your presence. I pass your picture several times a day.
Now the station has seen more than 50 years and a mural has been commissioned of which you are an integral part. You may already have been contacted but there will be a dedication on September 22 and a barbeque during all watches. For Family members, we hope if you are still in the area, you might join us on that day. Please call the captain's office or reach out to me.
May Officer Warren's memory be a blessing.

Rick, I remember the smile on you face as you put your baton into the holder on the driver's side door. You were the first of us that was allowed that honor and the smile told me you were rubbing it in a little. That was, OK. you earned it. Thanks for teaching me what a gig line was and how to line it up. You promissed to teach me and some of our classmates how to play golf at the pitch & putt course by the airport. I am holding you to that, but will wait until I join you. I could not face Nancy or Kelly after sittng with them after the incident. But a while back your daughter tracked me down and called me. I saw Nancy and Kelly's sisters, they are all beautiful. Miss you brother.

I never met Roger but I am sure that due to his sacrifice on that May evening in Van Nuys, my FTO and I were more then likely saved from a gun battle in the LAPD Division located 5 miles west of where Roger was shot.
That evening I was working in the West Valley Division with my FTO and was aware of Rogers murder from radio reports as well as news from all local stations. The feeling of family loss was everywhere with the Department. Shortly after mid night on the morning of May 9, My FTO and I spotted and watched as a vehicle circled a 2 block area several times in the business district of Reseda California. The only open business in that area at that time of day was a liquor store. We initiated a vehicle stop on the vehicle and as my FTO was approaching the vehicle that was occupied X 5 the passenger at the right rear began to produce a revolver from his right side and I was able to convince him to stop. My FTO and I would have been ever mindful of tactics in the situation but this was sharpened but what had occurred in Van Nuys Division just hours earlier. We requested a back up and as we held the suspects at their positions inside of the vehicle not a movement was made nor a word spoken. Back up arrived quickly and with sufficient officers, the 5 were removed from the vehicle. Each man had 2 weapons with long guns in the trunk and long criminal records.
The suspects had killed a Police Man in Northern California earlier and while fleeing South had decided to stop and rob for needed money in their escape attempt.
The Detectives that interviewed the suspects following the arrest asked them why they had chose to give up rather then attempt to escape during the stop and they indicated that due to the news reports of the earlier shooting of the Police Man in Van Nuys, LAPD officers would be extra vigilant. I had graduated in the class just ahead of Roger and although we had not met, I know that a Brother had, by his sacrifice, saved us from a really bad night in our division. RIP Brother.

I was just looking at (actor) Kent McCord from Adam 12's website. There is a letter that lays out the concept of the show based on real life happenings of Los Angeles police officers. The writer of the letter mentions the dangers of patrol work, and uses the very recent death of Ofc. Warren as an example. It includes an account of a ridealong with LA officers, which occurred the night of Ofc. Warren's death. I thought the family might like to know Ofc. Warren's spot in the history of a much-beloved TV cop drama.

Uncle Roger,
I've heard your story told by your nephew on numerous occasions, he never misses an opportunity to share the tremendous pride he has for you, his dad, and his grandpa. I know Matt would rather have had you around but is honored by the sacrifice you made. You have since been tasked with keeping three generations of Warren / Stoner officer safe from above. Ill bet you tell god over a beer how you have your hands full with this current one. Haha. I wonder at times if thats you who whispers in my ear and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I hear a voice after every proactive radio transmission your nephew makes that tells me I better stop what I'm doing and go cover him. If that is you, it is my honor to assist. I wish I could have known you, it has been a privilege hearing your story. You made the ultimate sacrifice but I know you would be proud of the legacy you left behind.

Uncle Roger,
On November 24, 2012, my partner and I attempted to take a suspect into custody who was under the influence of alcohol and causing a disturbance while eating alone at a restaurant.
What started off like every other contact with an intoxicated subject, this one quickly turned very violent, and into a fight for our lives.
The subject attempted to strike me several times and I quickly took him to the ground, with my partner clawing over me to assist.
The fight for our lives ultimately lasted 4 minutes, all of which was on the ground (just me and my partner), before we were able to exhaustedly take the suspect into custody.
I walked away from the altercation suffering a torn labrum, a torn rotator cuff, and a dislocated shoulder. My partner didn't walk away from the altercation, because he suffered a sever sprain to his knee, torn ligaments and a fracture in his foot, as a result of the suspect deliberately twisting it in an attempt to free himself.
It was then we learned that the suspect was highly trained in combat and self defense as he is a honorably discharged Navy Seal who has seen extensive combat over seas, as well as confirmed enemy kills. The suspect stated after the incident that if he had been carrying his knife or firearm, he would have killed us both.
I had surgery on January 8, 2013, to repair my shoulder and now I'm on the long road to recovery. My partner is currently still in a leg cast and he too is on the long road to recovery.
Uncle Roger, I want to thank you for watching over my partner and I that night, and every night while patrolling the streets. I truly believe that if you had not been sitting on my shoulder that night, we would be sitting next to you right now. When I put my uniform on, I can feel you pinning my badge on my chest before my every shift. I love you dearly, and with every radio call I respond to, I know you're responding as my cover unit.
Thank you for your strength and honor, and guiding me as the sheepdog!

My father was dear friends with Roger, Sr and was asked to view the body of Officer Warren that night. Having taken place just a few blocks from our Van Nuys home, this horrific event hit home on multiple levels--the grieving for a friend coupled with the loss of a peace officer who is sworn to protect us all. rip
