I want him to grow up to be a man of character and integrity just like you. Rest In Peace.

I am not a officer, but I did serve as a Juror during the trial of the suspect charged with the murder of Officer Ward. I have thought of him & his family many times over the years, how his family coped all these years with this tragedy. I remember the tape from so long ago quite vividly, & the testimony of Officer Gary Childs, it was quite clear he was heart broken. After reading the reflections of other posters, I felt the need to say something. After all these years I hope if anyone reads this that knows the family, plesae extend my condolences to them, I have never forgotten & never will forget Officer Ward.

Detective Ward. I didn't know you, I was very young when you gave the ultimate sacrifice. I do know a friend of yours, that served beside you in Baltimore. Tonight over a dinner, several current officers sat with another as he reflected over your sacrifice. I was inspired to look up your memorial and post this comment. May God bless your soul and touch your family, so that they always know that you are up there, watching them and us as we do the same job you did so many years ago. God bless....

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

He was our uncle Marty...my brother and I saw he and my father as Batman and Robin. They were the wonder twins that were sent out to help clean up the streets for the good people. It was not until I saw my father lose uncle Marty that I truely knew what love was outside the familey blood line. Uncle Marty walks along side daddy everyday, soetimes you can talk about him, sometimes you can ask dad to re tell a story told a thousand times but hear only the sound of silence. Uncle Marty we miss you.

I am going to take my time and do this right.......
One word to describes Marty ,"Remarkable" . Marcel was the oldest of Seven children, the first born . He was the one we looked to when ever we needed or wanted something. He spoiled his younger sisters ,looked out for his brother, made his parents proud, loved and spoiled his sons ,nieces and nephews. He was the, "neighborhood dad" and a community leader. He was well respected, clever, handsome, brave and a wonderful person to be around. He sincerly wanted to make Baltimore a safe place to live and he paid with his life. We walks with us as our Guardian Angel and lives forever in our hearts. Marcellus Ward will live forever in our hearts!!!!!!!!

Mr. Marty was a neighborhood dad for all kids that grew in our community. I played with his sons and Mr.Marty would come out and throw the ball with us and wrestle. He would include the neighborhood kids in things he would do with his sons, for example go out for pizza or ice cream. Today is 12/3/05, 21 years since he was killed. I was 15 then and now 36. I will never forget you Mr.Marty, and I miss you a great deal.

We ask Thy blessings and eternal rest to all our brothers and sisters
Who have sacrificed their very lives in the performance of
their duties. Give their loved ones the peace and
Strength to bear the anguish of their loss. Remove all
resentment from their hearts, knowing that eternal
peace and rest will abide their departed loved ones
forever. This we beg, Thy name forever and ever,
Amen.

Marty, I have learned so much about you through your good friends Detective Gary Childs (Baltimore City Police, Ret.) and Rich Bronyak (Special Agent, U.S. Customs Service). They tell me how wonderful you were . . how sincere, how generous, caring and how you possessed incredible integrity. They tell me that you were an outstanding "undercover."
The undercover recording device which recorded the sounds of your tragic death always brings me to tears. In death, you have saved many lives Marty. As a police trainer, I have played that tape for thousands of police officers. No audio or video tape, anywhere, impacts on officers like your tape. At the end of the tape, there is always total silence in the room . . many are crying. Thank you for protecting us Marty . . . thank you for giving "all" . . I honor and respect you as do all law enforcement officers everywhere. With brotherly love and respect, Jim Crotty, former Richmond, Virginia Police Officer and retired ATF Special agent.)

God bless your family Marty.
I have been an officer for many years.
While attending a DEA course in N.Y. we listend to the tape that recorded your demise 19 years ago.
Not a word was spoken as we all reflected. The lives that have been saved by your family's generosity to allow the tape to be used may never be known. As for me, I will always remember.
